Product Description A woman and her son must leave a small South Carolina town because of her wild behavior. .com A gentle, oddly idealistic script and assured performances by a strong ensemble cast make this coming-of-age tale a standout. Skipped Parts is the story of Sam, a young would-be writer, and his free-spirited mother. Shipped off to the wilds of Wyoming by his embarrassed politician-grandfather, Sam (Bug Hall) and his mother Lydia (Jennifer Jason Leigh, clearly enjoying herself) get down to the business of getting to know and shocking the locals. Sam meets kindred spirit Maurey (Mischa Barton), and the two, though only 14, begin to experiment with sex--the "skipped parts" of the novels they've been reading. Hall and Barton give astonishingly good performances for such young actors--Barton in particular shows a poise that bodes well for her continued career. The script isn't perfect, but it is earnest and affectionate toward its characters, and that goes a long way. Watch for Drew Barrymore, who joins in the fun for a few quietly silly moments as Sam's dream girl. --Ali Davis

A great coming of age novel. Unforgettable!
This is a great coming of age story that I have watched twice in one week since I decided to buy it on a whim. The story of Lydia and Sam and their exile to Wyoming, their unconventional relationship as mother and son is unforgettable. Lydia isn't a woman who is very good at being a mother considering she drinks quite heavily and goes home with men at the bar. When Sam meets a girl named Maurey, they both decide to start trying to figure out what sex is like. Lydia tells them how to have sex and from that point on, this movie is a strange, oddball journey. This film shows what can happen to kids who grow up too fast, but it does this in a way that is heart-warming and different than most films.I especially liked Michael Greyeyes' character, Hank Elkrunner. He plays a good guy who falls for Lydia only to have to deal with her wild ways. All of the actors in this film did a great job. And surprisingly, this film has a happy ending. All in all, a great, funny film that is sure to stay with you long after its over. Hilarious

This movie was cute. Does not give a realistic view of what would actually happen in this situation, but hey it's fiction. It's not meant to be a realistic portrayal of life. It's meant to entertain you for about an hour and a half and give you a feel good time. The lesson here is that family can be made up of all kinds of characters, and that it all happens under the most unusual of circumstances. So don't watch this movie expecting some life lesson on morals (unless you take away that everyone was accepting and taking care of each other, which is what society should be about). Watch it because it'll make you smile.

earnest exploration of growing up
"Skipped Parts" is like a rollercoaster ride through a library where the only books available are the ones missing the steamy chapters. Sam, our hero, is on a quest for knowledge, but not the kind you'll find in your typical encyclopedia. No, he's got his sights set on the forbidden fruit of literature - the sultry, scandalous, and downright saucy stuff. Sam's determination is as strong as his awkwardness, making for a hilariously cringe-worthy adventure as he navigates the treacherous waters of adolescence armed only with his pen and his burning curiosity.

A Great Coming of Age for a Young Boy is the 60's
Absolutely a riot if you are a male and grew up in the late fifties or sixties. Our poor hero suffers through so much as he tries to lose hisvirginity, with a girl who knows not quite as much about sex as he does. Then throw in a single mom, who likes to live with a revolving dooron her bedroom. Due to language and the subject matter is is most definitely R rated and not for the faint of heart, But it is a riot of fun.

This film is alright
Bug Hall's acting is really campy, piss-poor, & the plot of this film is stupid as hell, & it's a really strange film that I really don't recommend or suggest to ever really buy or own.

Different, Interesting
Different; not sure about such youthful discovery/exploration of sexuality, but great to see such famous young actors ... Mischa Barton, Bud Hall, Brad Renfro ... in the early years of their careers, under the guidance of an interesting director ... a plus that it was filmed in Saskatchewan!
