Excellent PERMANENT Filter For Yama 5 Cup Alcohol Burner Siphon
I have been using this filter EVERY DAY since January 2017 (it is now September 2018). Although the fine mesh metal screen APPEARS to be fragile and delicate, it has experienced ZERO WEAR despite TWENTY MONTHS of daily use and cleaning with the baby bottle brush I use to clean my Yama siphon.I make my morning coffee using a 5 cup Yama alcohol burner siphon. While the cloth filter that came with it is adequate, the oil from the coffee that the cloth retains does become rancid, affecting the flavor of the coffee brewed with it. To prevent that from happening, you need to either replace the cloth part often, or boil the entire filter assembly afterwards & store it in the freezer.I eventually replaced it with an antique Corey vacuum pot glass filter I purchased on eBay. I was pleasantly surprised by the additional "fines" that the glass filter allowed to pass into the brewed coffee. It much improved the "mouth feel" and therefore my enjoyment of my morning cup. However, despite being careful, I managed to break the glass filter during cleaning on a couple of occasions, necessitating replacement.Searching for a more durable replacement, I discovered this filter. I decided I would use it for an extended period of time before submitting a review. When I received it in January 2017, I was initially quite disappointed for two reasons: first, the screen itself seemed thin and flimsy. Second, the screen had what appeared to be a permanent crease, as a piece of paper that had been folded over on itself. I decided to reserve judgment and use it and not return it.After 20 months of daily use I am pleased to report that the filter screen is durable and shows ZERO wear and tear.To clean the filter I unscrew it (using my thumbnail) and use a soft baby bottle brush to scrub the parts (screen included) in warm soapy water. After rinsing in warm running water, I reassemble the parts -- tightening USING THUMBNAIL PRESSURE ONLY!It is obvious that the manufacturer was meticulous in their research and development of the fine mesh screen. It is TOUGH and DURABLE despite 20 months of rough handling when I scrub it daily. The time of "pulldown" is similar to the Yama cloth filter, which I presume may minimize any difference between the results of either brewing process.I only wish I could obtain a filter screen with a larger mesh that would pass more "fines," which would give me the increased mouth feel that the Cory glass filter provided. However, since I no longer need to worry about breaking an expensive antique that will become harder and harder to replace over the years, this filter is now my permanent "go to" for my daily morning coffee. The manufacturer earned a five star rating from me.

Needs improvement
The cloth filter that came with the siphon system was very good, but I knew I would need to replace it eventually. When I saw that a metal screen filter (similar to my French Press and pour-over filters) was available, I jumped on it because I preferred the ease of clean-up and that it would last “forever”. Unfortunately, the screen diameter is too small to effectively seal the siphon. The water goes up, but even touching the filter with my stirring spoon, after dropping in the coffee, often is enough to have all the water (and coffee!) drop back into the carafe before it has time to brew. NO GOOD! My guess is that an extra 5mm (I’m not kidding, it’s possibly only that much more surface) would probably get the job done.

... guy every morning for about a week and am pretty happy so far
I've been using this guy every morning for about a week and am pretty happy so far. There is a tiny bit of sediment in my cup but nothing to complain about; way way less than a french press. I did increase my grind coarseness from what I had been using for the cloth filters. I very much appreciate the simplicity of cleaning the filter as compared to my cloth filters. The thing that worries me is that the filter extends to the sides of the top and bottom plate in sort of a crinkly fashion. I try to fold the side flap up before inserting the filter but if one gets caught under I'd be worried about a bunch of silt getting in. A silicone gasket fitted to the underside of the filter would have provided a better seal.

None of the filters are great. The Yama metal screen takes second place.
I am a coffee roaster so I tend to care about the quality of my personal cup of Joe in the morning. I have purchased almost every possible filter for my Yama coffee maker. -- the original cloth filter, the Cory glass (purchased from eBay, the Diguo Permanent Coffee Filter, etc. The original filter with the cloth is a hassle to clean and will impart a taste to the coffee over time. The Cory glass filter (my friend thought it was a marital aid) did not work at all as it became widged in the top pot and wouldn't permit the coffee to flow back into the bottom pot. The Diguo's filter is probably my favorite with Yama's reusable filter a close second. Yama's thin screen and edges will likely become fragile and tear before too long.

Works great with my Bodem Pebo
I got this as a replacement for my stock Bodem Pebo filter. I bought the Podem Pebo to get away from plastic contacting hot water, so I was disappointed to find it came with a plastic filter. This stainless steel filter is the solution! It filters coffee even better than the stock filter. Very few (if any) grounds in my coffee. No need for cloth filters either -- it works great as-is. The upper stem on this filter also allows you to release the pressure before removing the upper glass bowl. Happy buyer!

and it worked much better, but the cover was a pain to deal ...
I bought a Pebo Bodum stovetop vacuum pot. I tried every possible option, trying to make their filter work to no avail. I then bought the Yama filter with the tie-on fabric covers, and it worked much better, but the cover was a pain to deal with. Finally I bought this and it worked great. The only problem is that the edge of the screen becomes all bent up. So finally I started using this assembly with a fabric filter with a hole cut in the center, and no tie-on. It doesn't work any better with the fabric, it's just a little more durable, and cheaper to replace. If you buy the Pebo Bodum, the very first thing you need to do is throw the filter in the garbage where it belongs, and save yourself the frustration

(The original cloth filter worked fine for 2+ years with just quick rinsing
I purchased this when part of the original cloth filter 'disappeared'. The hook on the spring almost came detached and in the process of rectifying the situation - a job that needs two hemostats and three or more hands - it launched itself into the void. (The cats found it two weeks later....)The metal fabric filter need to be disassembled and cleaned each time. (The original cloth filter worked fine for 2+ years with just quick rinsing.) When re-assembling, do not tighten the threaded part. "Finger tight" will seize up and require needle-nosed vice grips. Just thread together loosely.
