Haven't used this clip as yet...don't know the measurements, but I belirve they are included in product description.

how wide do they open?

They don't open. The slide lock slides back to allow the front to slide over the tarp. then you slide it forward to lock it in place. I don't like these tarp clamps because of the weak grip it has..
