The Doll's House

Sweet Story
This is a sweet story about the inner life of the dolls living with two young girls. They are very excited when they finally get a house to live in instead of boxes! There is some angst and conflict but all turns out well in the end. This was destined from the beginning for my Little Free Library. I enjoyed reading it; intended for 3-6th graders.

I Remembered this Story!
I'm not going to post any spoilers, but I will share... I read this story from my school library as a little girl well over 30 years ago. I can still remember staying up very late at night trying to finish it. It was one of those stories that really resonated with me, the kind of plot that I remembered days, weeks, and even YEARS later. I had forgotten the title but somehow found it and was able to purchase a copy recently for my own daughter -- who has already ready it twice now and also enjoyed it. This book is on about an early 4th grade level, but if your daughter likes dolls and dollhouses, she will probably really enjoy it!

Precious book
I first read "The Doll's House" when I was nine years old. I well remember getting it from the bookmobile that came around to our school in 1962. I never forgot the story of Tottie and the other dolls and recently looked up the book again. It did not disappoint. It is a child's book with an adult perspective, such as the "Little House" books do. A book that stays with you for a lifetime.

Beautiful story with puerile and frankly ugly illustrations
I loved this book as a child with its original illustrations. The illustrations in this version are perhaps the ugliest and least sympathetic, least interesting, and least professional drawings I have ever seen. What a pity for children who might be introduced to this classic book - the pictures could be drawn by some hack from the old TV Guide Draw Winky school of art.

Just as Dark as I Remembered
I bought this to read purely for nostalgia's sake. I remembered reading it as a child and it had always stuck in my mind. It was just as dark as I remembered.

Menacing but Marchpane was not the hoped for villain
I discovered this book while reading Lucy Mangan's excellent "Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading" and decided I should find out what I missed as a child. I did quite enjoy the story - and the delightful feeling of menace - but found the characterisation rather thin, even bearing in mind that this is a children's book. I had expected Marchpane to be a truly memorable character but didn't think she was a patch on the Queen of Hearts, the White Witch or Cruella de Vil. I also wondered about a child's reaction to a very dramatic and upsetting (even to an adult fan of Stephen King) event which occurs towards the end of the book. (I won't reveal what happens; I am assuming if you are reading a review, you haven't yet read the story.) The nearest parallel would in some senses be Aslan's fate in "The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe" which I remember was quite shocking to me as a child, yet the this book and the whole series of Narnia books were amongst my childhood favourites. Another concern is that although the story explores good and bad, it seems ultimately to convey the message that evil is rewarded.

Not suitable for sensitive children
This story has a very tragic ending that my 9yr old found incredibly upsetting - you may want to read the book yourself before giving it to your child, particularly if you have a sensitive child.

Enchanting.
This wonderful story works on many levels. It seems to be a delightful tale of dolls and their house but in fact a lot of deeper issues are cleverly woven into the fabric. It made me as an adult buy a dolls house and begin to furnish it.

I introduced my daughter to Rumer Godden when she was ...
I introduced my daughter to Rumer Godden when she was 10, suddenly getting worried that she would soon think she was too old to read the books for younger children. But thankfully I caught her in time and she is now a Rumer Godden convert and is looking forward to reading many of her books as she grows up.
