Good Value/ Great 5-bike rack
I did some significant research and selected this to transport five bikes; two adult and three kids bikes. I recommend this pretty confidently as a great value for the money. Positives: SIMPLE: This was easy to assemble and attach (you do need a socket wrench), and easy to load with five bikes. It took me only 25 minutes to un-box, assemble, attach and mount all five bikes the first time! OPTIONS: The mounting brackets rotate on the bars so that you can mount the bikes and attach at any angle (see pictures and video). Also, you have the option to lower the bar (see picture with it tilted and our van gate open) by removing the retaining pin. This is a great feature but only practical when the bikes are not attached to the rack. DO NOT ATTEMPT when fully loaded! QUALITY: This is made of decent quality materials (Steel, aluminum, thick plastic, and strong straps). The paint isn’t powder coated, which was the only disappointment and will lead to scrapes and eventually corrosion if you use this all the time. Negatives: - Even after tightening all bolts with socket wrenches, the rack rattles and sways. I watched the bikes in the rear view and saw them obviously moving the entire trip. I don’t think it’s a serious issue, but I wish the tubes fit tighter together. I wrapped painters tape around the inside pipes To fill the voids and so far it’s heavily reduced the movement. I recommend this as a good value for families that want to transport bikes casually for vacations or weekend trips.

Would buy again!
I was looking for a 5 bike rack and didn’t want to pay top dollar for it. I have a mechanical engineering background and believe this rack will hold up for a long time. There are a few things I would redesign if I produced this product. 1 - add a large welded loop to put a locking cable through, 2 - design the bike rest so they can be locked in position or tighten the tolerance so they will not be able to rotate easily as you put the bikes on (Nice idea for positioning the bike but very frustrating when they rotate as the bike is going on). 3 - add into the kit some padded Velcro straps to put between bikes as they are very tight together and rub in spots. 4 - build this this rack with the same dimensions for four bikes with an added push button extension bar on the end for a fifth bike if needed (this would allow for more room between bikes). Comments: I was concerned about the bike straps being difficult to reach and feed the straps through. It turned out not to be a problem. Overall they work fine, but take a little more time to put on and especially to take off than the rubber stretch style. They will not come loose after pulling them tight. I am not sure how well the strap material will hold up over time if left out in the elements but I believe they are replaceable. To put a bike on the inside towards the car the rack needs to be tilted out and then lifted back up with the bike on the inside. I only put a small bike on that side so far and it cleared the back of my van. If you put a bike on inside of the rack there is no way to access the back of a van even after tilting the rack because the van tailgate will hit the bike. Without the bike there it clears fine. It is a little difficult to reach and remove the tilt pin with all the bikes on to access the tailgate. I did it a few times with not too much difficulty but I am a bit stronger than the average person to lift all the bikes back into position. Overall, well built and designed and I would still recommend it as it is without improvements.

A Good Value Bike Rack
If you're in the market for good-looking, cost effective bike rack, you're probably going to love the Allen DELUXE 5-bike Hitch. Other "name brand" bike racks can cost anywhere from $250-$400. This one was 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of other models, and I was down with that! As a reference point, I have 3 kids 7,9,11 and we're just starting to ride as a family. Rack was attached to a Suburban, and this was our first road trip--a 5-hour drive that included freeways, 2 lane highways and even a minor stint down a dirt road. (I.E. - Our trip had lots and lots of "bouncing around.") PROS: * Solid steel construction and very easy to assemble. It was on the back of my truck within 5-10 minutes of opening the box. * 5 bikes DO FIT. It takes a little creativity getting the handlebars, seats and pedals to "line up properly," but surprisingly enough...we got all the bikes on the rack. * 360* swiveling plastic/rubber with anchoring straps provide flexibility to anchor bikes in different ways (there is a caveat, though...see below). * Cost effective. Arguably the best value on the market. * Black powder coated frame looks great. * For our first trip of 500+ miles, it worked like a charm. THE "IF'S": * If you plan on getting into the back of your vehicle with the bikes on the rack...it's not that easy. With no bikes on the rack, no problem. But the weight of the bikes, makes getting the pin in/out very difficult. I had to use a soft mallet to get the pin in/out and that was with only 2 bikes on the rack. * If you need to leave the rack on your truck, there's no way to keep someone from stealing it. So, if you park at the beach, for example, you'll have to remove your bikes, then remove the rack and place it IN your vehicle. With a socket set, it only take 30-60 seconds to remove the rack from the hitch. If you want to "secure" the rack on your vehicle, consider the Allen Stainless Steel Locking Hitch Pin for Allen Hitch Mount Bike Racks (2-Inch Receiver) . But read the reviews before doing so. * (caveat from above) If you do not have a top frame on your bike, (i.e.- ladies or children's bikes), you should consider a crossbar attachment like Allen Tension Bar Bicycle Cross-Bar Adaptor . While others have written that this crossbar is not needed, I respectfully disagree. Well, you'll need it in about 10-20 trips and here's why! The 5-hour trip TO our destination was WITHOUT crossbars. When we arrived, I saw the rubber attachment on the straps that were upright or facing downward, begin to pull away 1/8-1/4". These were on all the bikes that DID NOT have a top frame. Basically after 1 trip, the weight of the bikes weakened the rubber/plastic that attaches to the straps. It made me feel that somewhere down the road, the rubber/plastic could give way and possibly drop our bikes. Yikes!! No problem however on the bikes with a top frame. We did ourselves a favor and purchased 3 crossbar attachments immediately, and shipped them to our vacation spot. On the way home, we had peace of mind. Strongly considered the crossbars if you have "ladies or children's" bikes. OVERALL: This is a great value bike rack for someone who wants to get from point "A" to point "B.". If you need to get into your trunk, or lock up your bikes, you might want to consider the Allen PREMIUM 5-Bike Hitch instead. If you need to secure the rack on your car/truck while you're away, the locking hitch is something you may want to consider too. Good luck.

Good rack. very good price. recommend purchase.
After researching a rack over a couple of weeks I decided on this rack. With a full house we ha e 6 adult bikes to transport. My wife's has a quick release and fits in the rear hatch of our 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, so a 5 bike rack suits us fine. I've had the rack for about a month and have used it at least once every weekend before writing the review. As stated, I've loaded 5 adult bikes on the rack and braved the Houston freeways with no issues. I've also lowered the rack fully loaded to get into the hatch and had no issues raising it back and replacing the pin. I had help lifting it back to position with 5 bikes, but if there are 5 bikes on it there SHOULD be plenty of helping hands around. I did drop my wife off to shop and when I picked her up lowered and raised the rack by myself With Zero Difficulty. I haven't used the supplied No Wobble bolt as I had purchased a locking pin before using the rack. There is some sway without the No Wobble bolt, but that is no fault of the rack itself. I cannot say if the No Wobble bolt functions well because I have not used it. I do t want to go off into to woods and come back to a missing rack. I have purchased a locking Silent Hitch Pin and that should tighten up the rack to the hitch reciver and remedy the situation. It works fine with the locking pin, but for my own piece of mind I want to minimize the sway on long trips. It is Easy to put on and off. The Bikes fit nice and secure with the straps. I do use a Ratchet strap to further secure the bikes, again for my piece of mind. I am happy with this rack. It does the job it says it will do. I would recommend this rack.

Holy Wow!!
I've never owned a rack before and have just been waiting to buy one. After reading all of the reviews for this rack and several other racks, I must say that I am so happy with the choice that I made!!! The rack was incredibly easy to put together, easy to get into the hitch, and easy to operate. I read several reviews that mentioned not being able to get the pin back in once they had lowered the rack for trunk access, I didn't have that same problem. For informational purposes, these are the couple of issues that I do have (which are not a fault of the rack, but situational): I drive a 2005 Jeep Liberty. In order to use the 5th spot for a bike, I will have to remove my spare tire. I will also have to remove the spare tire if I want to open the back door of the car. That is a mild set back, but something that I can definitely live with. An if I'm not mistaken, I believe that there is an extension that can be purchased if this becomes a problem. Also, I purchased a receiver lock to use with the rack. The rack itself comes with a "no wobble" bolt to use in the hitch, and I'll tell ya, the rack doesn't budge when the bolt is tightened. When I put the receiver lock in place, however, there was all kinds of room for the rack to wobble back and forth. In all reality, I can't imagine that any one person will just so happen to have the right size wrenches (you definitely need two in order to get the bolts on and off) while passing by that will make it possible to steal the rack. So really, no worries. All in all, I'm extremely happy with the purchase. The price was more than right, the rack itself is very sturdy, and I'm just dying to get it out on the road.

Outstanding product for active cycling families
This is one of the only and as far as I can tell best products of its type that can hold 5 bikes, especially for the price. You don't have to worry about the danger and challenges of roof-top mounting. It is stable, strong, and well crafted. It can be tricky to fit 5 full to intermediate size bikes on of course. Some people have recommended alternating directions. I have tried this. Depending on the bikes and the order in which you mount them, sometimes this works, sometimes this doesn't. Most recently, I have found that mounting all of the bikes facing the same direction is almost easier. You have to be patient and use a little creativity in the process. Shift pedals, seats, or handlebars - slide frames left or right until everything fits. For bikes with diagonal frames (ladies styles, mountain bike, etc.) you would load one arm through the frame "triangle" and rest the lower diagonal frame on the other arm with the brace turned at an angle, but it still works. The only downside to this product, as others have no doubt mentioned, is there is no easy way to secure the rack to your vehicle, unless you plan to drill extra holes for a security cable. My solution is to simply remove it from the vehicle and lock it in the trunk when we are actually out on the trail.

Very easy to load any type of bike, works great.
There are only a few 5-bike carriers out there, and this one is by far the best price and works great. The way the holder for each bike swivels makes it easy to mount even kids' and women's bikes. I have not tried any little kids bikes, but my middle school girls' Schwinns went on easily - you just have to be a little creative on how to hang them and how to fasten the holder. The only adjustment I had to make to get all 5 bikes on was to raise the seat on one bike where it hit the next bike's handlebars. Anyone who complains that this rack does not have the anti-sway tie down like the pricey racks just does not realize that you can swivel the holder to tie down the vertical down tube on your bike. It may not be as rigid as one designed as anti-sway, but worked fine for me. The Premium model has some useful features, but is so much more expensive that this one is an easy choice. Since you are not supposed to lower the rack with any bikes on it, I am not sure what benefit the spring loaded pin is on the Premium. And, if you have all the bikes on your rack locked together, do you really need the locking ring on the Premium? I would feel safer if the tie downs were velcro, so once you put them through the buckle they were secure. My only problem is that I have to use an adapter to fit the rack to my below the bumper 1 1/4" hitch, and when loaded with 5 bikes it sags pretty low - I am sure I have scraped all the paint off the bottom edge of the rack going in and out of moderately steep driveways.

Can't do any better at this pricepoint
If you are looking for an economical way to transport 5 bikes, then I don't think you can do any better than this rack. It has some limitations and won't be right for every consumer; but for what it is, it is excellent. It is a heavy, solid piece of equipment, and it served me well during a recent 400-mile road trip to do some trail riding. Some reviewers complained about the innermost rack position putting the bike too close to the vehicle. I didn't find that to be the case. (I drive a CRV with a 2" "hidden hitch.") I had plenty of room. Some reviewers commented on how they weren't able to get 5 bikes on the rack. As I said in my initial remark, this rack does have its limitations. It is best suited for adult bikes with standard geometry (i.e., the traditional double-triangle design). On a recent ride, I was able to fit a men's touring bike, a men's mountain bike, a women's mountain bike, and two women's hybrid bikes on the rack. It did take some thought and some trial-and-error, though. The only way I could do it was by removing the front tires of some of the bikes so that I could turn the handlebars 90 degrees and get them in line with the frame of the bike. (I used velcro straps to keep the handlebars in position.) Some reviewers complained about hitch rattle. If you use the included hardware, that won't be an issue. I suspect that those who complained about the rattle were attempting to use the incorrect type of locking pin. You can add a locking pin, but be sure to get one that specifies "anti-rattle." (The anti-rattle hitch locks have a piece of hardware that goes inside of the receiver and keeps it pressed to one side, thus making it anti-rattle.)
