Only for the insiders
Oh, the memories of being bombed when you’re 14... I remember how deeply hurt I was when I realized the miserable war-zone country in all the news is my country now. Tim was the face of that - I vividly remember watching Sky news on satellite on the first night of bombing, trying to understand what he was saying (my English wasn’t so good back then) and wondering if where I live was going to turn into Hollywood war movie scenery. Tim’s book clearly depicts how pointless and egotistical the whole affair was from both sides. Hating Albright as much as Milošević makes sense again. It also reveals the inconvenient truth of how much the foreign intelligence services had to do with both making the case for bombing (KVM being run by CIA, the Rambouillet ultimatum etc.) as well as organizing the opposition to topple Milošević. Is that democracy? Serbia is in the same situation today with Vučić, but no one seems to care, as he suits the west. Finally, having spent 10 years in the region, and having used so few of the local words, it’s amazing how many spelling mistakes Tim manage to make in this book (Batjanica, Gotev je, persistently writing dj instead of đ and many more).Important contribution to putting together the 20th century history of the region, and a book definitely not for the novices on the subject.

Easy and light hearted read, for such a difficult time!
Complex events are described from the first hand experience of the writer on the ground.Journalists are the only ones risk their lives covering foreign conflict and I got a few times the feel that he is playing with danger. Its interesting to know what happened behind the scene or that even our Prime Minister was in the area covering the news. The writer’s personal account captured my interest yet all the political events were given full consideration. Sadly even a positive writer can not make the impending situation get any better and I am not happy with the prospects and the future of the area. Clearly more work needs to be done.I think the book is well worth reading. You will cover everything from the simple life on the ground to the complexities of the shadow play of intelligence offices and all the intrigues that are at play and make this area the lest stable in the region.

very good read
If you like recent political history, this books is very interesting and written in a clears and entertaining style. I love how it tells not only the visible developments but also the behind-the-scenes machinations. I felt appalled to learn (more) and so vividly about the Balkan tragedies

Eye-witness account of Last war in Europe
It is ironical that I started reading this book which is about the Last war in Europe when Russia launched attack on Ukraine and Europe found itself embroiled in another war.I became fan of Tim Marshall after reading his book "The Prisoners of Geography" and this book didn't disappoint too. He was present on the ground when all the main events took place in Serbia which led to NATO intervention and ousting of Yugoslavia's last president Slobodan Milesovic. The ground realities of a war torn country and struggles faced by common people is told with great detail. I realised how important journalists are, who bring out the truth for us to see from such dangerous places where I bullet can take their lives. Hats off to all the journalists around the world who dedicate their life to the pursuance of truth.I would recommend this book to all those who want to have a basic understanding of Yugoslav war and the present tension in Balkans. It was a captivating read which tells us how fight in one country will inevitably invite foreign countries to interfere (most of the time US & UK) and how things will take turn for good or worse. The entity named Yugoslavia ceased to exist in 2001 and this is the story of that dissolution.
