Hilarious
Picked this up on a whim. Never had heard of it or watched the trailer. This movie went to a place I wasn't expecting, and it was great! If you get to watch it without watching the trailer first, all the better. If you're into martial arts, have a good sense of humor, enjoy dark comedies, and can handle someone poking fun at stereotypes, then you will probably really like this movie.

Slow at first but it pays off in the end!
I have a low threshold for quirky independent movies but this one is really unique and good. It starts a little slow but picks up and - if you like dark humor - is a sardonically funny look at alpha-male mentality in America (not in a preachy way, just an over-the-top ridiculous way that will make you laugh). The characters are extreme and the fact that these events would never really happen is part of the movie's charm. Great acting by all three leads; I'm glad I rented it and would watch it again.

Awkward, dark, absurd, unpredictable, yet quirky, tender, poignant, & hilarious.
This movie has a dark underbelly, yet with a quirky redemptive twist. As the movie unfolds it does take a left-turn and there is a level of violence at times that is both shocking and dark, yet these scenes are neither incongruous nor without purpose. The key is to let the movie unfold and enjoy how it delightfully pokes fun at multiple stereotypes through the absurdity of certain scenes, that is both hilarious and appalling at the same time. And yes, a movie can be both, it has a luxury that real life does not. This juxtaposition is captured in the final scene before the credits roll and is not only absurd, dark, and comical, but beautifully written and brings closure and redemption to the characters and the world that they live in.

Napoleon dynamite vibes
It's like dry humor and I guess very Jesse Eisenberg. But somehow was not what I was expecting. I likes it for the most part but at times it was slow moving.

Comedy between the narrow lines of Karate, self help culture and hyper masculinity.
This film is a story of rebirth and awakening. We get a real sense of what the character is fighting for and why. It's the story of a man who seeks to become the thing that he is afraid of. There are many serious moments as we would expect from a dark comedy, but for the most part it finds humor in the quirks of self help culture and between the narrow lines of hyper masculinity and homo erotica. I liked its engaging and dysfunctional, yet believable world. The main character has vulnerabilities that we have all felt but few have dealt with in such an extreme way. Watch it!

Stupid
Don't waste your money. This is one of those throw away movies to save someone else from having to watch it

Glad I purchased it.
I did find myself somehow related to the protagonist, yes one day I was in big troubles, yes I did have to learn how to defend myself, and guns were literally my first idea.I loved the close down to earth sensation to be the new guy at the dojo, and I did laught at how ridiculous some stuff look like. The humor, really dark, did enjoy some of them, others were frankly terrifying. all in all, it will keep you interested in the movie till the end and the overall story is certainly something fresh to the common hollywood cinema. Glad I purchased it

Emotionally uneven
It's about a quite timid and downtrodden young man that has been beaten down by life and life's difficulties to such a degree that his overall quality of life is dismal. His co-workers disrespect him, random French tourists mock him in cafes, even random people in parking lots turn into bullies the moment they encounter his weakness. It's a really unfortunate state of affairs. This all comes to a boiling point when he is randomly attacked by a group of motorcyclists, whereupon he decides to take up Karate. Unfortunately, he wanders into a rather odd school filled to the brim with eccentrics preaching not just Karate, but a rather toxic version of hyper-masculine self-improvement. Naturally, one set of problems replaces the old.The film is supposed to be a comedy, and it is, at times. Other times it seems to be quite dramatic. And it oscillates between the two in such an awkward manner that sometimes we aren't sure if something is supposed to be a joke or not. The fact that some of the comedy is quite dark makes this situation even more confusing. Thus, I wasn't sure if some things were horribly inappropriate jokes or poorly done drama. Frankly, I'm not sure that the film itself knows the answer to this. Crucially though, the jokes were mostly unfunny and the drama mostly uncompelling.People looking for laughs will find this film to be in horribly bad taste. Drama seekers will find it quirky and insensitive. People who suspect, as I do, that there is supposed to be a bit of both will likely be, as I was, a bit underwhelmed on both fronts.
