Excellent value for replacing a landline.
Worked surprisingly well. Fairly easy to set up. Perhaps better for a dedicated desktop than a laptop. Excellent reception and clarity ( At least in the Detroit metro area). Voicemail transcriptions are accurately translated and easy to read via email.

It's cheap, and easy to install, but has some limits
The magic jack is the cheapest way to get phone service over internet and still have a phone number anyone can call. It was easy to setup, just plug into your router and existing house wiring or cordless base station. You get a new number to start and then you can transfer your old number for a $20 fee. Overall this is much cheaper than some other options I looked at, so I bought 2, one for me and another for a relative, and both installs were easy. It took 2 days to transfer my number and 5 days for the relatives. Speaking of price, note that there are some taxes you pay to transfer, plus you will have to pay your annual 911 bill. It varies by area, think mine was under $5 (year?). No complaints here, still inexpensive. The service includes voice mail, which can also be forwarded to your email. There is also a novel way to block robocalls by making caller enter a random 1-digit number. This cuts out most robocalls, which may include legitimate doctors reminders, your children's school, etc. However, there are a few flaws with magicJack service that I did not know about. First, it comes with caller id, but not caller name, so my cordless phone announces "Call from V" for every number not in its address book. Second, the voice mail is a little quirky. You may get the notification dial tone when you pick up, but sometimes you don't, and in one instance it duplicated an message (same time stamp and everything). I switched both lines to use the cordless answer machine instead. The last problem I encountered is I tried to dial into a MS Teams local access number for a conference call. magicJack announced the number was pay-per-minute and not supported. I used my mobile phone to dial in without issue, so not sure why an IP phone would incur charges and my mobile did not. Overall I am satisfied as I can make calls and clarity is very good. I have not tried taking my home number with me and don't plan to, so YMMV. They do offer a 30-day money back guarantee, so you should be able to determine if any of these limits are deal breakers.

Just What A Work From Home or Small Business Needs
Have used MagicJack for my business fax line for at least 10 years and have never had any issues. I recommend this for anyone for both home use and business (MagicJack for Business), as it is a great way to save on business expenses and have more control over features. The price cannot be beat, you can even get a vanity number or a toll free number. Nothing can compete. Very easy to use, customer service is excellent, functionality is unrivaled and it can be used with both Mac and PC as well as connecting to your printer for fax services. Very small device which is aesthetically pleasing to look at. For those who work at home, this is a MUST!

High hopes dashed; an exercise in frustration
I bought this so my mom could have her landline without the high monthly costs. I work for a tech company so I'm very tech-savvy. The first stage of set up was complicated by missing driver errors and "freeze on update" issues. After several frustrating hours I got the device to work. I tried to import my mom's existing number but got cryptic error messages. It took forever to find a tech support number but after searching I found one. I called did several voicemail transfers before I got the privilege of waiting over an hour to finally speak to someone who, while forwarding me to another technician, dropped the call. I went online to do tech assistance via the website. Another long wait but finally had someone who said they could assist me with the import process. The tech support person would ask me three or four questions, which I would answer then they would restart the whole conversation all over again. Looking back, I'm sure what happened was the person who started out helping me ended up going on a break and my chat would be transferred to someone else who would make me start all over again. This happened three times within the 40 minutes I was being helped. Finally, it looked like everything was going to work. I was told the import process could take up to 2 weeks but would likely be less than that. The next day I received an email telling me that it was not successful and I had to resubmit the request. I went through all the steps to resubmit and met with the same software issues that I had dealt with before. Luckily I kept good notes from the previous encounters and was able to get the number registered for import again. A few days later I received the same email again. I went through the process again. A few days later I received the same message again. Once again, I went through the steps to complete the import. This has been going on since September. I gave up on trying to import the number and said I would just take whatever number they wanted to assign me but was told that the process cannot be completed until I have a registered number with Magic Jack. I have been through the process more times than I can recall. I have given up on Magic Jack. I bought a different system (1VoIP) which, although it cost more initially, was easier to set up and functions well. I would definitely say it was worth the cost in reduced stress and frustration. Magic Jack might be the cheapest VoIP phone service but the company needs to improve their customer service experience if they want to stay in business.

Still a great option for low cost
I had to replace one after about 3 years. First bought MJ Plus in 2017. In 2019, the phone lines were getting a lot of static so I replaced our 10 yr old cordless Panasonic phones with new ones. Didn't help. Searched internet and learned it might be MJ as it may have taken a hit with our continuous lightning storms. As soon as I did, the line was crystal clear again. I put the second one on a surge protector. MJ worked excellent on our FiOS. Never any problems. All calls were crystal clear, no lags and callers said the same on other end. A year or so later, the MJ app was rolled out so I could make/take calls and texts on my iPad! Super convenient. Can also call into the voice mail with the app to pick up messages. If power goes out or if I disconnect my MJ or my phone, then calls will be recorded as a .wav file and emailed to me. Another handy feature. Call forwarding is included with MJ which came in handy when we were without internet as calls could be forwarded to my husband's cell phone. Connecting with iPad contacts is optional. Once I did that, I could block callers and names would show up in the MJ app's call menu for ingoing, outgoing and missed calls. I can search to place a call to someone in my contacts right from the MJ app. I can turn on ipads DoNotDisturb feature and calls will go straight to voicemail without ringing. However we moved to rural America in 2022 and stuck now with sucky internet. Only option here is microwave tower, cellular and satellite. We've tried them all. Cellular hot spot with booster antenna gives us the most stable internet but we have a lot of packet loss during daytime (10-40%) which means MJ isn't working well between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm. Still it's better than no home phone. Works just fine on weekends, early mornings, evenings and sometimes during day. I did try OOMA here but the internet is so bad I couldn't even get Ooma software updates to load on the telo after leaving connected for 18 hours. I was hoping maybe Ooma device might be more robust since it's four times the size of MJ. But in the end could never get Ooma to work. I contacted MJ support when first installing and when porting and when setting up the second MJ. Support was helpful enough each time. My husband and I switched to needing a hearing impaired phone (with on screen captions) last year. We just can't hear conversations well on cell phones and traditional phones any more. For residential home phone service, I am quite satisfied and I can't beat the price. It's not the fault of MJ that this internet is too slow. If you have decent broadband and no packet loss it works great.

Difficult
MagicJack is supposed to be easy to install. This install took four days and several conversations with people protective of cows.

Amazing, affordable and EASY VOIP solution!!
Why did it take me so long to find this hidden gem? I searched for weeks to find an AFFORDABLE VOIP solution. VOIP USE - Small business phone to keep my private numbers confidential. Every other VOIP provider wanted $26 or more PER MONTH!! As my business grows, this may be worthwhile. However, I am not at the level currently. This is a plug it in and it just works - SOLUTION. Don't follow the instructions on the box (you'll spend unnecessary money). Plug it in and then goto the website, sign in, get a FREE VOIP number. You CAN purchase vanity numbers from the website ($10). Buy this. IT WORKS. :)
