The two stars are for the illustrations
I don't like writing critical reviews of children's books because I feel like a main qualification to being a children's book is "not up to the level of adult standards". As an adult writing this review, it seems unfair to say I didn't like the book, but this book just misses the mark for me. The text starts out great - "just in case you want to fly..." but by the 3rd or 4th page it just seems like the author was trying to list random things off that didn't fit a rhythm, rhyme, or cadence even. I watched the video where the motivation for the words came from, and while it's a touching story, it didn't translate well into the book. I still read it to my baby when I want to change things up, but it is probably one of the least read in his little library. He likes looking at illustrations, which is why I'm giving this two stars and not one. Overall, it might be good for when learning to read, but at this price-point, I can think of a lot less expensive books that introduce double the vocabulary. Wouldn't recommend as a single gift, but the illustrations are good for developing eyes so it would be worth including in a book collection.
