Great Reel For The Gulf Coast (8000)
This Fierce lll is in my opinion The Best Buy for my money. A couple months ago I ordered two (8000) because the price was good and I liked the specs. I wasn’t disappointed from the first day. It is quiet and smooth. I use them for surf fishing down on the Gulf coast. I have caught just about everything near the coast and it does well no matter what size. The HT-100 drag system seems to hold up well, even when I have a runner on the hook. I really appreciate the weight and size. It not only looks great but more importantly it performs better than any spinning reel I’ve owned. I always thought that nothing would beat my Daiwa BG Saltwater but the Fierce lll is now my favorite. After looking at the diagrams of several reels in and above this price range of $110, I concluded that Penn’s re-engineering has made this reel in the best class of saltwater reels. I tried to order another for weeks now but it’s been sold out, but Amazon has assured me that more is coming back in stock soon. I highly recommend the Fierce lll for a well designed, well built saltwater reel.

Perfect mid range freshwater reel!
Firstly, I've been a Penn purist for 45 years. I've owned and used Penn reels for years. Although I dont like that a majority of their products are made in China, I'm still very loyal. The 1000 Fierce 3 is a very nice reel. It doesn't feel 'tiny'. It casts nicely and has a smooth retrieve. Im mainly using it for crappie on an 9' Okuma UL. Wouldn't take it out to the salt water though. Its mostly aluminum which doesn't play well with a salt environment. Salt, I would go with the Spinfisher series. If you can find/buy the USA made Spinfisher 4 series reels, buy those and rebuild them. They ARE the best spinning reels ever produced. Take care.

Solid spinning reel, powerful retrieve.
Solid spinning reel, powerful retrieve. Already used it for jigging in 100 to 300 feet of water, caught a nice sized travelley with it, over 10 lbs and brought it in with little or no issues. Had it for dinner. Awesome reel for the price, canʻt go wrong.

It's great for bluefish and stripers- a bit heavy but an excellent reel

Way better than i thought it would be.
About the only reason i would not give it 5 stars is the tinny sounding drag. Sort of zebco level cheap sound. But i stopped several black drum up to 44 inches and 30 plus redfish up to 30 inch with a 2500 loaded with 15Lb berkley x9 braid so it gets the job done very well. Only lost one before the net and that was a bad hookset. Drag is awesome the rods just get the correct bend and drag lets go within about 1 or 2lbs of extra drag. Why is that important to me? well a bouncing rod tip and funky drag means the hooks can make a bigger hole in the jaw and can cause more fish losses. Please guys who make reels don't just put a rubber washer set on the spool for braid and call it braid ready, make a hole to attach the line/braid through the spool, its way easier to tie on line securely that way. Cheaper to manufacture too so there is that also.
