Baby size 4: it could hold an entire shoe wardrobe. Child size 4: it could probably hold 4-5 pair. If some of the shoes were sandals, it could hold even more. The dimensions are in the description, you could tell how many it will hold by just measuring. Suffice to say, it is very roomy.

Can you fit 2 pairs of sneakers (size 10) in the main slot?

No, you can’t fit 2 pairs of sneakers in size 10. Mine were 8 and a bit distorted after zip up. It may be possible two low cut sneakers and soft material that can be bent a bit. There are 2 compartments and one pocket for thin flip flops.

Is the outer mesh part also waterproof/ clear vinyl behind mesh...or can dirt and odor easily permeate thru mesh to clothing, if packed in a suitcase?

It’s mesh. None of it is waterproof or clear covered.
