I was left in want, but don't blame the author.
I'm glad I read it, but I was left in want... I guess that it was not the author's fault. I came to realization that there just isn't a lot of information on William Wallace. Most of his life and personality will be forever lost to history. However the author did do a great job of explaining the times, circumstances and history of Wallace's era.

Excellent read - very much a scholarly type of book
Excellent read - very much a scholarly type of book, so if you are looking for Braveheart, go elsewhere. If you want a very good look at his origins and the period, and all that is actually known about him, this is a great resource.

Short, concise..
Short and concise history of a man we know little about. Very well written.

Thorough but cumbersome
The book was well researched, but the author's use of complex wording made for very cumbersome reading. Writer's style is for readers with advanced education. A version with simpler wording and structure would make it appeal more to the average person with an intense interest in Scottish history.

William Wallace
A fine collection of pretty much everything known about the historical Sir William Wallace, organized like a biography. I would recommend this book for someone who, like me, loves to read about and research the history of their Scottish ancestors, or who is seeking to read about the real man behind 'Braveheart'.

Over my head...
With someone with little background in medieval history this book was well over my head. It felt as if the author assumed the reader to have a basic background on the subject. I do not and was hoping to build one with this book. Obviously I was wrong.

“All men die, but not all men really live”.
Given the scant knowledge that we have of large parts of Wallace’s life, the author makes a great job of pulling together the available sources, to create a coherent narrative. Ignore the nonsense history of Braveheart; the bridge at Stirling (pivotal in the defeat of the English) is notable by its absence in the first set piece battle of the film. The idea that Wallace slept with Edward II’s queen is preposterous, even by Hollywood standards….As is the portrayal of Scots living in Stone Age roundhouses. This book is the real deal, covering the duplicity of the Scottish nobles, including Robert the Bruce, in their on/off support for Wallace. This book is highly readable & highly recommended.

A Splendid read, very informative👍
🏴⚔ Being a scotsman, i learned about Sir William Wallace from a young age and the history of Scotland, and you he played a short part in my country's history but a very important one non the less, this is a great book on the man himself, a man of mystery, not alot about him was written down and how he played a vital part in Scotlands 1st wars of independence in the 1290's..a must read for Wallace fans👍

Was Wallace a military genius?
Very good informative book but tends to jump around a lot in terms of historical evidence which is confusing with too many references to past and future evidence rather than presenting evidence in a chronological manner. Very good on the latest research that William Wallace's father was Alan and not Malcolm but perhaps a little 'dry' and lacking in Scots passion in my opinion only, for what it is worth. Also Dr Fisher describes Wallace as a 'military genius' but although Wallace was indeed as gifted military leader and jointly responsible, with Sir Andrew Murray, for the incredible Scots victory at Stirling Bridge, his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk calls into question Fisher's description of him as a military genius.
