I'm wondering how it affects flooring under it. I have pergo in Kitchen and don't want to 'damage' it.

I have mine on engineered hardwood flooring and it's the best rug/mat I have ever had. It never moves so dirt and grime never get underneath it. Thus, the flooring never gets scratched or damaged.

Did anyone have an issue with a musty odor to this mat. Mine smelled awful when I took it out of the box.

No... That's aweful! We love our kitchen mat.

Is it waterproof enough to use outside on a deck near a grill?

want to get for the front of sofa for my dog who jumps down..he had knee surgery...we have tile floors...will his nails tear this?

It's not plush enough for what you want to use it for, although it would be better then the tile...I do not think his/her nails would punchier the mat. But you did not mention if it was a lap dog or a big dog. I would suggest dogie stairs...This mat is wonderful and surely would cushion the jump and it will stay in place..
