why does the motor get to hot to touch

I do not have that problem. I sharpen maybe 7-8 knives in about 15-20 mins. The motor does not get hot. If you do not have it on for more than 15-20 minutes, it should not be getting so hot. If you are sharpening 50-100 knives over a 2 hr. period, then ya, it could get a little hot. If it is just a few knives, I would say your unit is defective and I would return it. There may be a dangerous wiring problem in the unit. Be careful.

1st time sharpened 8 knives. Noticed that the blades have cut through the plastic to the metal as you bring blades through the slot...is this normal??

...not sure if it is "normal", but the same thing happened to me. I just ignore it.....what other choice do you have? If you want the blade sharpened as far as the handle, there doesn't seem to be any other way. Holding the blade level as you draw it through the slot seemed to ameliorate that problem somewhat. I do like the product. I don't see any other way to get the blade sharpened as far as the handle.

how well does it sharpen serrated knives with a diamond edge

I'm not sure about diamond edge knives, but I will say it only works on less than half of my kitchen knives as the width of the blade on many of my knives is too wide to fit in the slot and contact the stone. It didn't work well on my serrated knives. Good for smaller paring knives.

what are the grit sizes on this sharpener?

I've looked at all the documentation & manual but there is no obvious information on grit sizes. Suggest you contact manufacturer for help on this question.Good Luck.
