Question 1

My order arrived on a hot day, and the box and the vitamins were hot when I opened the package.  I'm wondering if that killed the active cultures?

I just talked to customer service (June 4, 2018). I was concerned about the same issue, because my pills sat in a hot mailbox all day. She told me she wished she could talk to everyone at one time who is misinformed about this. She told me these pills have been made to withstand heat in shipping and in the mailbox. At long as it's not in direct heat for 8 days straight. She said she would be more concerned about people putting them in the fridge where moisture can get in and ruin the pill. She said this is the reason they do not ship with ice.

Question 2

why aren't they refrigerated?  I use them now and would NEVER use them if they were shipped unrefrigerated. That's the most important thing.

I am cautious as well. I phoned the company about this issue.  The live microbes withstand a relatively high temperature for a period of time ( I think two weeks) so they can be shipped without ice packs.  Prior to opening, they should be stored in a cool, dry place ( below 77 degrees I think). The way to tell if they are still viable is to open the bottle and check the color. They should be a nice cream color. If they are too dark and look yellow or brown, they are either old or have not been stored well or were in too much heat for too long, etc. But, the color is the best way to tell. When they arrive  I always put them in the refrigerator.

15, 25, 50, 90 billion? Which is best?

The 50 billion is not having the effect I was wanting. The important thing is that no matter how many billion, but that the product contains 'at least 10 different strains of the organisms'. In over the counter products you get maybe 1-3 strains. I think I'll go down to 'fewer billions' since that will be less expensive.
