When a young child decides to build a fort in the backyard, Grandpa comes forward to help. But they can't do it alone-they get help from the six simple machines: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw, and wedge. Told in cumulative rhyme, similar to The House That Jack Built, readers follow the building process to completion and discover the surprise reason it was built. Review: Educational and fun children's book! - Great read aloud with the children at after school care. The story line and pictures were engaging, and the introduction of simple machines and their use was excellent. Review: Wonderful !! - I bought this for my grandchildren. Wonderful story! I love all the projects! Great learning tool with an engaging story!! Love it!! A+

Writing not stellar but the message got across. When we finished the granddaughter could name all the simple machines and spent the rest of the day going around naming them.

Wow! Painless science instruction
Having "struggled" through my introduction to physics in high school, I bought this book for my grand niece. She grasped the concepts with ease and quickly turned to the activity section of the book. I believe that she will be one young lady better prepared for her first introduction into physics. We both enjoyed this book!

... for my 5 year old students and was very happy with the size of the book
Bought this for my 5 year old students and was very happy with the size of the book ,slightly larger than a typical paperback book, will be great for circle time. Great story to show practical use of the simple machines with enough repetition that they can remember it.

This is a great book when teaching a combined grade 1 and 2 in Ontario as the science curriculum is different for each grade. It helps overlap simple machines with structures.
