From Leaves of Grass to "Song of Myself," all of Whitman's poetry in one volume In 1855 Walt Whitman published Leaves of Grass , the work that defined him as one of America’s most influential voices and that he added to throughout his life. A collection of astonishing originality and intensity, it spoke of politics, sexual emancipation, and what it meant to be an American. From the joyful “Song of Myself” and “I Sing the Body Electric” to the elegiac “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d,” Whitman’s art fuses oratory, journalism, and song in a vivid celebration of humanity. Containing all Whitman’s known poetic work, this edition reprints the final, or “deathbed,” edition of Leaves of Grass (1891–92). Earlier versions of many poems are also given, including the 1855 “Song of Myself.” • Features a completely new—and fuller—introduction discussing the development of Whitman's poetic career, his influence on later American poets, and his impact on the American cultural sensibility • Includes chronology, updated suggestions for further reading, and extensive notes For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Review: Excellent Product :)!!! - Excellent item, support and service :)!!! Review: Excellent book, packaging for shipping not so good - Superb collection of the poems of Walt Whitman. Paperback edition. Very pleased. My only small complaint is that the shipping wasn’t very good. Should have been wrapped better. The book was simply placed in a typical desertcart Prime slightly-padded mailing envelope, and by the time it reached me, the cover of the book was slightly damaged. The book should have been shipped in a more protective small box, insuring that it would not be damaged en route to the buyer. However, I can live with it, as it wasn’t a gift.

Essential reading
To the choices given me to evaluate this book, I say: What do you mean, How is the author's writing? We're talking Walt Whitman. This is certainly not a quick read, but it is worth digesting slowly. Not every reader will like every poem. Even Whitman constantly revised his work. I see this body of work to be essential reading for every educated American.

I found a lot of it just self centred tosh but do admit that he sometimes made me gasp with his amazing beauty and this in itsel
similar feelings as to Leaves but a lot more digestable . once again patience is a needed quality by the reader . I found a lot of it just self centred tosh but do admit that he sometimes made me gasp with his amazing beauty and this in itself made it worthwhile . it is a 'work ' that needs resilience and at times great understanding . I can realise the scandal at the time of publication to certain "passages" . it is only that Donna Tartt extolled a couple of his lines that urged me to read him . I just ,from the little I knew of him thought that he was an arguable journalist .

Classic
This is a classic, so it's pretty much what you expect to get. That said, I was surprised by how thick this book is. It's over 800 pages. That's a massive body of work.

Walt Whitman is my favorite. I have ready all of his work a couple of times. I bought this just to have a collection in one location. I've cracked it open a couple of times just to kill time or relive one of my many favorite poems. It's a paper back with thin but sturdy pages. I got exactly what I wanted.

Good
I have read snippets of Walt Whitman over the years but decided it was about time to join the dots so I picked this up and given the reputation behind Penguin I figured there collection would be the best one for me and I am glad I did. I am enjoying this volume.
