Model Railroader's Guide to Coal Railroading Review: Great reference book - I am an N-scale model railroader and model Western Pennsylvania during the 1950's.The one thing I had to model was coal operations and long drags of coal hoppers. Some of my earliest childhood memories about trains are sitting at a crossing waiting for a 100 plus coal hopper train pass by. I am close to Pittsburgh and I am also close to Lake Erie so I can model the coal docks and loading/unloading operations. This book has a huge amount of detail and is nice for a person who never worked in the coal industry or train industry. A lot of questions were answered. I am not a fanatic about every last detail but I don't want my layout to look like a homemade bicycle. Kalmbach Publishing Company offers a huge selection of these information filled books. It seems pricey at $17 dollars for 98 pages but it is worth much more if you are modeling coal operations. I have a big selection of Kalmbach reference books in my train room but they were purchased locally.so I won't review them here. I think this would make a great gift idea for a model railroader. Review: Learn About Coal Mining Railroads - My great-grandfather was a coal miner and I grew up in the coal mining territory of western Pennsylvania where railroads were an everyday fact of life. This book explains the use and ultimate value of railroads to coal mining. Two railroads, the Pennsylvania and the B & O (Baltimore and Ohio) ran through my hometown, as did the narrow gauge Waynesburg & Washington (known as the W & W, or the Wiggeley Waggeley). With this book you learn how to model such railroads, and also learn much about the coal mining and railroading industries. A really good read.

A great collection of coal industry photos, facts and history
This book takes you through the years, locations and history of the coal industry. I grew up in coal country and wasn't aware of many of the technical details and facts provided. Great photos.

A good source of information
It covered the topic well - the section on how coal deposits form is easily understood (but a bit simplified for a geologist or miner); only gripe is the lack of a more complete explanation of the different grades/sizes of coal (I know it's important, so I may do a little more research). Still, very useful to one who may model a railroad that is mostly a coal hauler.

A unique book
The book showed up quickly in good shape. And it's pretty decent to look through some ideals.

Useful, but could be better.
As with all of Tony Koester's stuff, it mostly deals with earlier era railroading, not much modern era info.

Super interessante Zeitschrift

These books are very informative for the modelling in multiple scales. Highly recommended.

Good book on a rare subject in this country . If your looking for UK or Europe based ideas - then it's not for you - just all American . Lavished with pictures both modern and old time - plus descriptions and ideas . For the money it's a bargain !
