Ring Repair

Good book! Rings are by far the most frequent repair, and you probably already know why: people gain and lose weight, so there will be frequent resizes. That's not nearly all this book covers though. There is quite a bit here and if you want to learn how to repair rings, this is the book. You do have to have access to a studio or your own equipment to practice these projects, but this book assumes that you have that. This book actually goes hand in hand with setting repair, and you'll find some of the same rings in both books, but Ring Repair covers sizing/etc, and Setting Repair covers the setting portion of that ring. Therefore, there is no real overlap.

I recently joined Let's Make Professional Jewelry, Mr Revere's worldwide group to teach beginners and experts his techniques. This book was recommended as an add on and it does not disappoint. Chapters are divided into simple ways for a novice/intermediate jeweler to learn how to adapt skills so as to resolve problems if common issues arise. Super helpful!

I've been a custom jeweler for a while now, but long before that I was a repair technician at a very high volume shop. This book is an excellent place for an apprentice to get started. It gives some basic outlines and even comes with the JA Quality Assurance placard for ring repairs. Overall the descriptions and the photos are of a high quality in that regard. However, I do think more detailed instructions and a more varied approach to the way you could go about doing these repairs would have been a great addition. Overall, if you are new to the repair side of jewelry, I highly recommend this book as a place to start!
