Love it

I read all the Asterix & Obleix books as a kid (a friend of mine owned them). I decided to get this one for my 7 y.o son, to encourage him to read. Some of the words are tough, but he does like to look at the pictures and try to read it. I forgot how funny the names were (or perhaps I didn't get the Latin references as a kid) - the dog is Dogmatix, one of the Romans is Ginandtonicus, the village Druid is Getafix, and the village Chief is Vitalstatistix - ha! I plan on slowly acquiring the entire series - great fun!

Nice hardcover

Asterix and Obelix are classic in comics. The story is still great, the jokes are even better then before. I use these to read to my younger child and she loves the duo and their adventures. The font is easy to read for most.

So glad to find these available!

We had this whole collection when we were kids and our parents sold them in a garage sale to our great disappointment. We've thought about how much we enjoyed these books as kids and wished we still had our copies. Just found them here and I'm giving them to my siblings for Christmas. So excited! The paperbacks are good quality - they seem to be "hardier" than I remember them being back in the day. Covers are thick shiny cardstock and not paper thin. Colors are vibrant and clear.

Pleased

I remember reading this book with my stepson, then age nine, and thoroughly enjoying the amusing names and wily ways of the Gauls as they overcame the Romans. It was a joy to once again be able to read these Asterix books with my grandson, now age nine. I would recommend these comic books to children of nine to ninety who would also enjoy amusing situations in which the little guys overcome the big guys, while at the same time learning a tiny amount of history.

Classic

My wife grew up reading Asterix and Obelix. These were part of her Christmas gifts. She loves them.

Wonderful fun!

I've been a fan of Asterix and Obelix for forty years, got my husband and kids into it, now I'm laying siege to my son-in-law. I figured he just had to have some of these, so guess what he gets for Christmas! This is one of the first, and a really good one. Careful though, they're addicting!

An enjoyable earlier work

In this, the second work we see Goscinny developing patterns and characters that reach maturity in later books. It satirizes Paris and big cities everywhere. Unlike Asterix's village, there is a mercenary, materialistic atmosphere prevailing and deceptive or dangerous people are around every corner.Parisiens will recognise the cover illustration- the Ile de la cite - the oldest settlement in the capital.

As advertised

Bought for nostalgic purposes bc I loved reading these as a kid. Maybe this specific one is not the best story choice, or maybe they were way more entertaining in my young mind!If you’re looking for one that ends in a big feast, this one does not. Still cute and the book itself is manufactured nicely.

Superb Artwork, Script falls a little short...

This book, by the standards of Asterix, is a very basic story. Getafix has broken his Sickle, and as he only uses the best and with the Druid of the year contest coming up, Asterix and Obelix are dispatched to Lutetia to buy a new one.The Artwork in this book is slightly different from the Style used by Uderzo in his later books with Goscinny, a bit more mechanical looking..but I love it! The standard of the drawing is excellent and the inking more subdued than others for example, "Obelix and Co".I feel the book is unusually let down a bit by a slightly one-dimensional script with a lot of tearing about Lutetia and not that much in the way of Characters. It's still very enjoyable but not the best in my estmation that Goscinny wrote. A number of supporting Lutetians are introduced then passed over in quick succession, unlike "Asterix in Switzerland." I don't know what period of the Gauls development this is from but it strikes me as a bit of early filler material.I've only knocked off one star because the drawing really carries the story and I love gazing at the World of Asterix with the big Town of Lutetia superbly realised. The jokes are there but not really as comical as usual.I would of course recommend this as a purchase for all fans as it still ranks way above the later Uderzo only books.

One of the best

Well you wouldn't know this was only the second in the series, as the quality of the drawing has come a long way since the first book, The Gaul, a year or two earlier. The characters look more confidently drawn and much more like the ones we came to know. And the quality of story, well this is just one of the very best, in my opinion, involving a quest to get a very important implement made for their great druid as he heads off to the prestigious Druids' Conference in the Forest of Carnutes. Has a lovely homely atmosphere because the quest takes them to Lutetia, Ancient Paris, which looks very green and lush.
