Is this good for mechanic work?

I suppose it depends on what type of mechanical work your doing, but the "ball" end of the hammer comes in quite handy for a variety of things. Unless I'm pulling nails, I prefer this hammer. And as far as quality goes, the Estwing is peerless.

Any warranty info on this item?

I read most of estwings terms and conditions, not a lawyer understand little of what I read. You break an estwing tool using it the way it's intended to be used call them up they will replace it.

What weight hammer would you recomend for someone who is only buying 1 hammer?

It all depends on what you plan on doing with the hammer.  I think I do have one of these, but for metalworking, woodworking, sculpture, and carving I have something on the order of 30 hammers.  Each one for a separate task.  So buy this hammer, then by more.  Haunt the thrift stores and estate sales.  You will find this hammer adequate for some tasks and not for others.  Use that experience to guide your next hammer purchase.

Can you use this on primarily on metal safely?

Wear eye protection.  Our questioner is not specifying the metal upon which he is using the tool, nor the temperature of the metal, nor the state of hardness of the metal, or the state of corrosion. The description of the tool specifies that it is a metalworking tool.  So one might think that the tool itself will not self destruct into flying metal bits upon striking a metal surface.  But the use of any tool presupposes that the user has had some training in basic safety procedures and is using the tool in a relatively low state of inebriation.  This tool, a hammer, is capable of doing harm when wielded with harmful intention.  I have a 16 oz version of the Estwing Ball Peen Hammer, and was forming metal with it just yesterday and neither I nor any neighboring equipment was damaged in the process.  But I do not feel any liability should any other person come to harm by misuse of a tool that I might recommend.
