It is so refreshing a book coming from a patients perspective. It is highly informative and well researched. And I don't mind at all that it wasn't written by a physician. I've read hell of a lot about it (also books from doctors etc.) and I've spoken to quite a few specialists in that area and it's just so frustrating. They think they know better even though they don't have this kind of disease themselves. I try to explain but they don't accept my arguments nor do they want to try to find ways to work with me rather than against me. However, I find this book to be much more of a guideline than any of my doctors suggestions. I believe in my fellow Hashimotos and it is much easier to relate to other people experiences than to doctors who keep comparing those with lingering symptoms to those who seem to have no symptoms under their treatment. Highly recommended book for people concernd. PS: It's too bad though that it's so hard to get the "pigs thyroid" in Germany.

If you are hypothyroid and still not feeling healthy and fit, even though your doctor tells you you are all right, this book will explain why. It also talks about the connection thyroid-adrenal glands, which is very important. Many thyroid patients suffer from adrenal dysfunction (= a shortage of the hormone Cortisol) without knowing. There is much more to thyroid disease than just taking Levothyroxine (=T4 hormone) and getting tested for T4 values and TSH in the blood. Over the last years, much more has become known about thyroid conditions, but general medicine is slow to pick up on it. The standard medical treatment is insufficient and outdated. This is why patients need to educate themselves (and their doctors) in order to really get better (and not just get by). The information in this book is of vital importance to anyone suffering from a thyroid condition. I would recommend it as the best starting point if you are starting to read up on your condition. The references to other books, websites and patient forums are also invaluable. Also check out the Stop The Thyroid Madness website, which is really good and gets updated with all the latest information. This book talks about how the hormonal system works and what is making you sick. It talks about regular treatment and alternatives. It gives information about supplements and food. It tells you how to interpret your lab test results and what tests you should take. And more. The book also includes the most comprehensive list of symptoms (thyroid and adrenal) I have come across. This is really important, for as you start reading these lists you will recognise so many symptoms that previously you might have thought were unrelated or had a different cause. When I read those lists I realised that I hadn't even been aware of many of the symptoms - I just thought these things were either normal, or part of my bad physique or I hadn't paid close enough attention to my body because of the overpowering fatigue I suffered. Just one, even more recent, point should be added: the treatment of Hashimoto's disease. If you have been tested for thyroid antibodies, and really everyone with thyroid issues should, and have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's the book you need to read in addition to this one is "Hope For Hashimoto's" by Dr Alexander Haskell. He is the only one so far who has proposed a successful cure for Hashimoto's and his book is also full of additional information about adrenals, breast disease, and very specific supplements. Dr Haskell's book shows an in depth study about the particular nature of this condition which he has conducted through a few decades of medical research. His website contains video seminars which are very enlightening: [...] Very importantly if you are a Hashimoto patient like me: natural thyroid hormone will make your condition worse (see Dr Haskells' video's or book for the explanation), and so will taking Iodine supplements (or Kelp), eating gluten and probably also eating cow's milk products. I tried all of the above and fully agree with his opinion.
