Is it necessary to always connect the pressure washer to a garden hose or can it be run independently for short periods on just the reservoir?

Never run a pressure washer without a supply of water. And always bleed out any air in the hose before turning the unit on.

Does this model have metal threads to attach garden hose?

I just purchased this model from Home Depot (10/26/20) and the garden hose inlet has plastic threads.  However, it comes with an aluminum adapter with a filter screen to attach the garden hose.  So you thread that metal adapter on to the plastic threads and never remove it.  If yours didn't come with the metal adapter I've seen them for sale on Amazon. The spray hose connection has metal threads.  You should always add quick-connect fittings to all connections anyway.

Question 3

Do you have to unwind all the hose to use this powerwasher?  Is the reel a functional reel that you can use like a standard hose reel?

The 390SS is a integrated hose with reel. You can simply attach the gun to hose and leave it. You wind the hose up and thats it. But in practical use, it works much easier and less risk of tipping if you undo all the hose 30ft and undo a couple coils you get from it being reeled up and thats it. It works very well. If you have not had a PW and dont know that these hoses are stiff, you may complain that they are stiff. most are, besides the gas high pressure rubber ones.

Can you use this washer with an extension cord

No problem.  This has a long cord so it works for me.  Forgot we have an outlet on the dock so next time it will work.  Even w/o extension cords, I love this unit.
