Butterfly Wings: A Matching Game

No butterfly names on the cards.
I love these products, I have 3 other matching games from them, and 3 of their bingo games. They are all fantastic, educational, the cards are of a very high quality and the illustrations are beautiful. This game is also beautiful and equally well made, but has what I consider a fatal flaw.Like the other games you are matching two different images of the same thing. Which is great because you learn that those two dissimilar images go together; a leaf and its tree, male and female birds, a flower and its cultural significance. But unlike those games, this one has no butterfly names on the cards. You have to match the closed wing image to the open wing. And it turns out they often look nothing alike! So you have to reference the guidebook every time you flip two over just to confirm if they're a match. And since you don't know their names, you always have to leaf through the whole book studying each picture to see if it's the card you picked. It completely disrupts the flow of the game, and makes it very hard to even remember where things are because each turn takes so much longer. The other problem is that it's much harder to learn the names of the butterflies. When the names are on the cards the information is paired up, so the name gets coupled with the image in your mind and it's an easy way to learn. Looking it up everytime feels more like studying. I'll concede the cards are prettier this way, but it just doesn't work as a game. I've attached an image of some of the "pairs" to illustrate the difficulty of finding any similarity between the things you are tasked with matching.I myself bought this to play with my 4yo son, who has enjoyed the other games for years. I have found it to be a wonderful way to teach him about nature; to him it doesn't even feel like learning, he just enjoys playing a game. But this one hasn't really been playable. It's too much to ask a child to commit 25 pairs of fairly long butterfly names to memory just to play a matching game. I'm hoping someone involved in the production of these games happens to see this, and they keep names on future games that come out, because I think it's an otherwise amazing product and will keep buying them if they do.In the meantime, I've split the deck in half, as I've found about half the species look similar enough inside and out to know it's a match. So I can just play that half-a-game with my kids, even if we don't learn what any of them are called.

Name ID not on cards.
These cards are beautiful but there are no names on the cards to identify them. Each pair has one with wings open and one with wings closed. You have to look in the book to see which goes with what. In the bird set, they have the names on them (which I already owned). I was disappointed with that. It is not as effective as a learning tool without names.

Simply beautiful!
This term we are studying insects and we bought this for a treat. It is beautiful -- exceeds expectations. We've enjoyed playing a matching game (a few at a time, face up) and I think we will eventually play a "Concentration" face down sort of matching game. I'm glad we bought this.

These games are gorgeous!
The entire series of games are very beautiful. They are also a hit in our homeschool. Haven’t found one the kids don’t like. Can’t wait to get the last game we don’t have yet to add to our collection.
