Super close shave, no-nonsense, economical and easier to use than I thought
I hate shaving! Who doesn't? I mean, it's a daily chore that, frankly I could do without! I find it interesting that companies who try to make money on that grind, like to refer to it as an "art". Like "let's go back to the nostalgic art of wet shaving!" What a crock! Just give me a razor so I can get this crap off my face! Recently when the manufacture of the razor I'd been using for years stopped making my twin-blade cartridges in favor of a 3 or 7-blade (seriously?) replacement that cost more than twice as much, I started shopping around and came across the rebirth of these old safety razors -- they're just like the ones I remember my dad using in the 70's! I watched several YouTube videos and read plenty of reviews before I finally decided to try them out. I bought this Viking razor because it was cheap, it's supposed to be intended for newbies like me, and it had good reviews. I paired it with a sleeve of 100 Falcon blades, a Viking shaving brush and a generic shaving bowl. The next morning I used them. First of all, should probably point out that I shave in the shower as the last part of my shower routine -- been doing it for years. It's just so much more convenient that way - my face is already wet, my beard has already been softening in the steam the whole time, and it saves the extra time and messy hassle of having to do it over the sink. I have a steam-proof mirror that suctions to the wall of the shower that has a little razor holder on the bottom which makes it crazy convenient. My first time shaving with this new razor took a LONG time! I was super careful to keep the angle of the head right (30-45 degrees) and gingerly took lots of small, short strokes. When I was done, I thought it was one of the closest shaves I'd ever had - but at what cost? It easily took more than twice as long to get the job done (does this mean I'm I destined to become a shaving artist, then?). But without a single cut or scrape, the next time I shaved I went a little faster, then a little faster after that, so that by the time I was on my 5-6th shave, I was back to my normal time. Change in anything takes a time to get used to - especially when you interrupt a routine you could normally do in your sleep, like shaving! I've now used the razor more than a dozen times and I'm only on my second blade that cost all of eleven cents, yet has provided me with wonderfully close shaves! I'm completely sold and not going back, sorry Gillette. As for the brush and bowl - well, they went back to Amazon. They just weren't for someone who had no time or was unwilling to make the chore of shaving an art. The badger brush (apparently if you're going to shave like an artist, your brush must be crafted from actual badger hair) was scratchy and the whole swirling thing in the bowl incessantly just seemed unnecessary and frankly, it took too long. When I shave, I use Noxema because shaving creams and soaps really dry out my skin, so at the risk of offending wet shaving aficionados who have nothing better to do than to dream about tomorrow morning's stare in the mirror, I just grab a little clump of Noxema, lather it up directly on my face with my HANDS (scandalously barbaric, I know) then get down to business. Bottom line: For me, this razor coupled with Falcon blades provides A VERY close shave in the same amount of time as it takes with an expensive multi-blade cartridge, but at a FRACTION of the cost.

Very good Razor
Honestly I did have some razors before this, all cartridge ones. I had a set of about 5 of them I bought last year and barely ever shaved anything more than my face. They ran out a few weeks ago and I went to walmart to pick up some replacement heads and boom 40 bucks? Seriously 40 bucks for a tiny piece of plastic and metal? What gives? I then kept looking up ones I could reuse and stuff, found out old razors in the 50s were this type. I was like maybe I should get one of these. My folks said "they'll make you cut yourself" I am like whatevs. So I weighed my options and decided to give this a try. Honestly first try I did not cut myself a SINGLE TIME, when with cartridges I always do. Good one. I ordered a sampler pack of about 100 razors of varying brands to go with this for CHEAP only like 11 bucks. Rather than 40 bucks of the bloody cartridges. I was able to shave myself easily. I decided, oh considering this razor's blades are so cheap I could shave other parts of my body just to test it, So I did, frankly does a better job than cartridges, jams less with hair, and I cut myself less. I also like the heft and aesthetic better, I'm pretty sure this is brass rather than stainless steel but it does do the job just as well and brass is a step above pot metal. I wanted quality and to give this a go, I MIGHT get another one of this brand but not sure what one. I give this Razor a 5 out of 5 cause honestly cartridges feel like crap compared to this and a ripoff. Why pay MORE for something that should cost LITTLE! In the long run this is gonna cost a LOT LESS than those cheap disposable ones. I highly recommend this!

Nice shave, surprisingly good quality for the price
This is a review for VIKINGS BLADE The Chieftain JR Double Edge Safety Razor, Meteorite Gray, and no other. I've seen reviews pop up in places they don't belong and then I'm thinking the product got a great review when all along I was reading about a similar product but not THE product. This is also a 2 parter. One about the razor and this: What prompts someone to review a razor poorly for the reason on having to change the blades after a single use? Unless that person is shaving tree stumps from the skin a good blade should survive at least 5 and sometimes up to 10 shaves. I currently get 7 before replacing. I shave every 3 to 4 days, medium beard. So, if you are new to, or thinking of joining the Double Edge shaving arena, don't listen to those reviews that say the savings is eaten up by the constant change of blade requirement. It just isn't true, in my and others opinion. Now for my review of VIKINGS BLADE The Chieftain JR Double Edge Safety Razor, Meteorite Gray. I rarely give 5 star reviews and also think there is nothing perfect in this world. There will always be something that isn't pleasing to the eye, taste, or smell, or you can't bear to hear it. I USED A USED BLADE (3 shaves on the odometer) from a Gillette DE razor of many years. VIKINGS BLADE The Chieftain JR Double Edge Safety Razor, Meteorite Gray is built with quality, nice looking, and gives a very good shave. Technically speaking I have no technical expertise, so my judgement is on the quality of the shave. Using a prewash on the old wrinkled face, and pre-shave oil, and tube type shave cream, I actually can say this is the best shave I have gotten in quite a while when compared to the Gillette I mentioned. I like the extra length of the handle and the weight is phenominal (and I believe plays an important role in the shaving quality). So I'm not a newbie using the DE safety razor, years of experience. Medium beard on an aged face, 3 to 4 days growth using pre-wash, shave oil, and tube type shave cream (I don't have names of the products because depending on the price at the time of purchase they will vary). If any of this helps great. If you think I'm an old bag of wind, great, and you are correct. But at least I shave.

Perfect for A Close Shave
I love this razor. Iโm not new to using safety razors but this is the first one Iโve bought by this brand. As a woman, itโs important to me to find a good razor and I wanted a plastic-free option. I love that using this razor is cheaper than using a traditional one, and the refills are cheaper too. Iโm very happy with my shave after using this product and would recommend to anyone. I seriously canโt say enough good things about this product. No ingrown hairs and my skin is so smooth. My only complaint is I wish the handle was a little longer but this wasnโt an issue.

Transparent Company, Great Shave! The Best Customer Service I've experienced yet!
It's refreshing to see a company lay out the sourcing of their products' materials and components plainly on the package as pictured. It's by no means comprehensive, but MUCH better than most. Also, the product arrived without any unnecessary plastic packaging! Contributing to the company's claim of being eco-friendly. And while the package is not made from recycled paper, it is recyclable. As for the quality of the razor, I feel it's a good weight with good balance and study construction. I hope to get a long life out of this razor, as it shaves me good. It is an absolutely fantastic value! EDIT 08/2022: About 3 years ago (and just about a year or so after I had started using this razor) I had started getting chopped up horribly when shaving! I knew something had gone wrong and so examined it closely and noticed the wings had gone out of alignment so the blade was exposed in a way it shouldn't be. This led to some pretty gnarly cuts. So I contacted Viking, and asked what kind of warranty they had on the item. Sympathetic to my situation, they offered to send me a new razor overnight and at no cost! Who does that!? Customer service like no other! I thought I should wait a while and make sure that this problem wasn't a defect in the line or anything before updating my review, and I'm back, three years later and some 1,000 wet shaves with the replacement and it has been rock solid! Whenever people ask me about shaving I mention my Viking. Great price! Great longevity! Great customer service! I couldn't be happier.

Perfect for sensitive skin. Use the right blade and this thing just flies.
Better than the full size chieftain in my opinion. If you have very sensitive skin this is the perfect razor for you. For a while I did not like this razor as it seemed too mild for me and it would tug too much while shaving. That all ended when I put the right blade in it and it suddenly just GLIDED across my skin. It almost feels as if I were shaving without a blade in the razor except for the fact that it's actually getting almost all the hair in just one pass. I am still experimenting with different blades but so far ASTRA super platinum seems to be the best for this razor in my own experience. I have very sensitive skin and using this razor has been a God send. It has the perfect size and balance and is easier to grip and maneuver than the larger chieftain version. It also has a tighter construction and feel. Does great for a mild razor, just put a quality blade in it and you get a wonderfully gentle shave with the hair slicing action of a more aggressive razor.

Awesome razor... my first purchase for actual razor blade shaving...
Easy to use and has good weight to it. The butterfly opens and closes with ease. Holds the blade securely with no movement from the blade at all. In terms of shaving I'm new to this so I can't really say how well it shaves vs. others in this realm of wet shaving... but I'm shaving with a pass or two satisfactorily. So far with my first blade I've shaved my face twice and my legs once with an Astra Platinum. Zero cuts either, which I wasn't sure I would be able to pull off. Good lather, hold the razor at a good angle and let the razor do the work gliding across my skin... I gather pressing down is a recipe for nicks or maybe not with the sort of 'mild' razor... but zero cuts so far! Very satisfied with this product and would recommend it to other people curious about trying wet shaving.

Nearly perfect
I've tried several DE razors and have watched a host of YouTube videos. One that nearly everyone recommends for new wet shavers is the Viking Chieftain Jr. First, the price--you can't beat it (you may worry it's not good enough since the average price for a good razor is about $30.00 but you're getting a quality razor). Primarily, this is a mild razor, and you are very unlikely to get any nicks. You'll get a good shave so long so long as you let the razor do the work. I got the gray finish which looks great. I wish the handle was longer but it is long enough to shave with. Because of the chiseled handle you'll get a good grip even with wet hands. There is a bit of razor overhang, but that doesn't bother me. The butterfly action makes it so easy to put in a blade and to clean afterwards. But be very careful. The twist knob on the bottom can get loose. I didn't notice and recently got a bad cut that left a scar on my chin.

Great shave at a great price!!!
Used a safety razor for the first time in my life! Had always used a popular 5 blade brand for over 25 years... was surprised how smooth the shave was with this little beauty of a razor!!! I was apprehensive about cutting myself whilst shaving, but this razor was perfectly balanced and performed really well. I doubt i will ever use another multiblade razor on a regular basis again as the shaving experience with this product (in combination with a gillete double edged blade) was better and delivered a closer shave then my experiences with a multiblade razor. Highly recommend this razor for anyone wanting to start 'wet shaving' (and save a small fortune in blades!). A great product... cant wait to try out other viking blade products now!

Loved the product
This is my first manual razor and boy I love it I currently shifted to manual one and was scared thought I might cut my skit or will have bruises all over my face but this thing was smooth and easy to use, also first time user you can use 1 blade for 3-4 shaves and wash the blade separately from the body and dry it thoroughly after use as the blade could rust if left wet for long time. Use 30 degree angle.
