Mechanical Pencil Orenz 0.2mm, Black Body (XPP502-A)

TL;DR: The .2 Orenz is the best pencil for this size lead, but it is still outclassed by the .3 Graphgear 1000 if you like versatile detailing pencils! As a comic artist who works on paper, I value thin pencils VERY highly. I'm happy to say this .2 little pencil is a lot stronger than you'd think. If you know how to use thin lead pencils, you won't have many problems with breaking lead. It also comes with a small wire in the eraser for unjamming the tip! HOWEVER-- The Pentel Orenz .2 pencil has the unfortunate fate that I daily drive a .3 from Pentel's GraphGear 1000 series of pencils. The size difference in lead isn't THAT noticeable between a .2 and .3, in my opinion, so they're in direct competition for me. The lead support system in this Orenz .2 pencil is a metal barrel that slides back into the pencil as you draw. .3 pencils used to be made this way too, and I HATE it. This mechanism doesn't just break lead, it SPLINTERS IT. And splintered lead is what causes jamming. It's painfully easy to bump the metal protector barrel with your paper or your sleeve and not notice the lead has been exposed-- and then it snaps. In comparison, GraphGear 500 and 1000 series pencils have a stationary barrel to support the lead at the tip. The 1000 series even has spring loaded retraction like a pen, to protect the pencil tip and lead when not in use. (500 series can't be retracted, but they are heccin strong tips anyways) Why is a stationary barrel better? Because this allows you to tilt the pencil and create an ultra thin point on your lead. This alone will allow a well made .3 pencil to out-tiny a .2 with a sliding barrel. The .2 Orenz is definitely not a good sketching pencil, it is a detailing pencil! You won't be making any fluid motions with it without gouging your paper on sharp lead, or just breaking the lead. Get this .2 pencil if you want a specialized detailing pencil! If you want something more versatile, get a .3 GraphGear 500 or 1000!

Pentel is a Japanse company and they are the one's who make this specialty mechanical pencil. As you can see in my pic it's all in Japanese. Just YouTube watch the 60 second video or just finish reading my review here. This is not your everyday mechanical pencil. That's not saying you couldn't use it as one, that's just me saying that this is a super specific mechanical pencil. Rarely will you find 0.2 mm lead refills in American stores. I haven't honestly been checking since I plan on buying it on Amazon like I do everything else but I trust the other reviewers input about it. I make Gunpla models for a hobby. I have honestly bought every special tool, markers, paints, etc. But when it all comes down to it all I need is a $20 plastic nipper, a tamiya hobby knife with #11 blades, and this Pentel Orenz 0.2mm mechanical pencil. I certainly recommend this to any Gunpla builder out there working on an HG and/or RG grade 1/144 kit. Reason being is that Gundam Panel markers and Tamiya Accent panel lining inks are way too messy for a 1/144 model. The Gundam markers are too thick for the panel lines and a nightmare to clean up and the Tamiya Accent panel lining inks are actually terrible for your kit if you don't clear coat it first before you apply it. It will eat up your parts. (especially the white pieces they are most susceptible) Now that my rant it over the 0.2mm size is perfect for 1/144 and it's super easy to use a hi polymer eraser to clean up the piece if you start to smudge the lead on accident. However, the lead smudging is very minimal with this pencil since the lead shouldn't protrude much or if at all past the barrel. When I got this all I did was clicked it a few times until I saw the lead finally start to come out (maybe 5 clicks) and then all you need to do is use the lead until that lead protection barrel is sucked all the way back in like a phallus and sack on a cold day! That's it! I love it and I'm sure you will to.

I like to write notes in books that i am reading. and have used other brands in the past. I needed misplaced my other pencil and purchased this. I was concerned that the lead work break easily when writing, and i was wrong. It writes great, is the right size for me and it's comfortable to hold in my hand. I highly recommend it!

I grabbed this Pentel Orenz 0.5mm mechanical pencil in white because I do a lot of note-taking and quick lists while traveling for work and leisure. After moving from Florida to Delaware, I wanted something reliable that wouldn't leave broken lead crumbs all over my bag or notebook during flights and hotel stays. The idea of a pencil that protects the lead sounded practical—no more constant clicking or picking up pieces off the table. I expected it to write smoothly without the usual snapping I get from regular mechanical pencils, especially when I'm jotting things down fast or at odd angles in a car or plane seat. It mostly met those expectations, but with a couple of small quirks. The main thing is that sliding sleeve mechanism. You click once, and the metal pipe around the lead moves back as you write, keeping the exposed part super short and supported. In real use, this means I can write longer stretches without the lead breaking when I press a bit harder during meetings or when sketching rough travel plans. The 0.5mm size gives a good balance—not too thin for daily writing, but fine enough for neat notes. The body feels lightweight and balanced, with a rubber grip section that keeps it from slipping in my hand during longer sessions. Practically, it's handy for things like marking up printed documents, underlining key points in reports, or doing quick math on the go without worrying about smudges or breaks as much. I used it recently on a business trip to update itineraries and make checklists, and it handled the constant pocket-in-and-out without issues. The white body looks clean and doesn't show dirt easily. On the flip side, the mechanism can feel a little finicky at times. Sometimes the sleeve doesn't slide back perfectly smooth, especially if there's any dust or if I haven't used it for a bit. A couple of times the lead advancement felt off, and I had to fiddle with it or clear a minor jam, which isn't a huge deal but breaks the flow. The eraser is tiny and gets used up fast, so I still end up carrying a separate one for bigger mistakes. It's also on the pricier side for a plastic-body pencil, though the build seems solid enough. Value for money is okay if you value the lead protection. Refills are standard Pentel leads, which are easy to find and affordable, so it doesn't cost a ton to keep going. For someone who hates broken leads interrupting their thoughts, it's a fair trade-off. It won't blow you away with luxury feel, but it does the basic job without much drama. All in all, this Orenz is a solid choice for practical daily use, especially if you're tired of regular pencils snapping on you. It lived up to my hope for fewer interruptions during writing sessions, even if the mechanism needs a gentle touch sometimes. I reach for it when I want reliability over fancy extras.

I'm a big fan of this 0.2mm pencil, but I imagine that's just because of the thinness and I'd equally like any other pencil of the same diameter. That being said, this ain't a bad pencil. My ONLY issue is that if you press too hard, the lead breaks inside the sheath, and that causes a double-feed problem. I always press too hard, so this happens maybe three times per week (under heavy use; I am an engineering student). EASY FIX: So, all you gotta do is break down the pencil, then the tiny piece in the tip is where 2–3 pieces of lead are jammed. Shove something 0.2mm down the barrel (tip to tail), and they fall out, pencil works again, no problem. EXTRA HARDCORE PROTIP: I was using another piece of lead for my "something 0.2mm" to shove down the barrel, and that was frustrating because they'd break super easy. I was getting ready to write a bad review on this guy and buy a spool of 36gauge wire to wrap around the clip so I'd always have something available to fix it. HOWEVER!! I /just/ realized, there's a wire stuck underneath the eraser that is exactly what I needed—it's like they designed it like that ::mind blown:: Buy the pencil, I have no complaints.

There are countless mechanical pencils on the market, but the Pentel Orenz truly shines because it fixes the most frustrating design flaw in the entire product category. If you have ever owned a precise, fine-point mechanical pencil before, you know the heartbreak of accidentally dropping it or tossing it into a bag, only for the fixed metal tip (the guide pipe) to get slightly bent. Once that tip bends even a fraction of a millimeter, the pencil is essentially garbage because the lead will continuously snap and break as it tries to push through the distorted opening. This pencil completely eliminates that problem. The metal sleeve fully retracts inside the body when you aren't using it. This simple piece of engineering means the most fragile part of the pencil is entirely protected from pocket damage, drops, and bends, ensuring the tool will actually last for years. Furthermore, that same sliding sleeve does an incredible job of protecting the ultra-fine 0.3mm lead while you write. Even though 0.3mm lead is notoriously fragile and prone to snapping under normal writing pressure, the Orenz shield glides along the paper with the lead, completely eliminating mid-sentence breakage. The lines are razor-sharp, the matte black body looks incredibly professional, (though I have other colors with different leads for easy identification) and the build quality feels premium. Pentel clearly put a lot of thought into preventing the exact pain points that make other mechanical pencils unusable.

I have ordered 3 of these mechanical pencils; I loved them at first, but within weeks, they quit working. I tried to load lead, without instructions on the product container, (or they were in Japanese which I can’t read) but the lead wouldn’t come out. I bought 3 of these pencils, separately, thinking I must be the problem, but no, they quit. I even bought the lead refills by the company which made the mechanical pencils. In the comments I read of a mechanical pencil people rated highly and have ordered one by that different company, and hope it works.

No lead advancement right out of the package! So disappointed. Nothing helped. I added more lead which I had ordered (so my investment in this pencil was adding up). Cleaned the tip with fine included jam cleaner... didn't help...I clicked and shook it so many times i was worried I was going to wear out the clicking parts. So I reported the failure and they will be sending a new one right out, AND i DON'T NEED TO RETURN THIS ONE. Very NICE.. I've read so many nice reviews about this .2 mm that I really want to try again. If the next one works well, I will give it a great rating! OK, I received my replacement pencil, added extra lead to it, clicked it and everything worked perfectly! It writes and writes and writes without clicking the top for lead advancement. I was worried I'd have to click it every minute or so because the lead is so thin. but this isn't the case which is fantastic. I am very happy with the feel of this pencil and it is perfect for the finest detailing. I've changed my review to 5 stars.

Okay, I'm officially hooked on this pencil! I've been trying out nicer mechanical pencils lately, and this 0.2mm one is hands-down my favorite. Seriously. As someone with naturally tiny handwriting, I've always struggled to get it looking neat and precise with thicker leads. This little guy? Total game-changer. My writing instantly looks cleaner and way more controlled. Big bonus: Comfort. My hands often ache when I write, but holding this pencil normally? Hardly any pain. It's been a real relief. Now, the catch – and it's a noticeable one: That super-fine 0.2mm lead is FRAGILE. Like, breaks surprisingly easily if you're not super gentle or even sometimes when you just write normally. Honestly, that's the main reason it jams up inside. The good news? It comes with that little clean-out rod, and fixing a jam is actually really quick and simple. No major drama there, just a minor hassle. Despite the lead needing a light touch, I'm totally sold. The level of precision you get is just unmatched. If you write small, sketch intricate details, or need pinpoint accuracy, this pencil is absolutely fantastic. Plus, for what it does? I feel like I got great value for the money.
