This cat scoop is sturdy enough so I don't know why it wouldn't work for crystal sifting or rock hunting.

Are the openings on the scooper smaller than the average scooper I found that the average scoop is holes are too big?

I have three kinds of litter scooper. The long one has holes a little smaller than short one. I sent a different one back because it didn’t help. But I kept getting the little pieces of litter would slip through the holes. (I don’t like those little pieces. Then I saw this scooper at Pampered Chef. It has little tiny holes and nothing gets through. Everyone laughs at me because I bought that kitchen utensil to scoop litter.
