Garmin BC 40, Wireless Backup Camera, Works with Compatible Garmin Navigators

this is the second back up camera ive owned they work great ,easy to set up and the pic is great

The "Garmin BC 40, Wireless Backup Camera, Works with Compatible Garmin Navigator" does exactly what it claims. Installation was easy, no drilling, and fits all standardized US State license plate mounting holes. The backup camera snaps into a new license plate holder (included) which mounts to the vehicle into the factory holes on the vehicle. Wife complained bitterly that our 2012 Honda Pilot had no backup camera. Problem Solved (wife happy now). NOTE: The camera is powered by two special AA sized Lithium batteries (not included) but you can buy a pack of 4 on Amazon for about $22. These batteries are extra long life so they should last a long time because the camera shuts on and off automatically as directed by the GPS. The camera image automatically comes on the GPS screen when you switch on the ignition while you are backing up and shuts off when you begin moving forward. A new button in the upper right of the GPS screen turns the camera on for 20 seconds when you press it. Might be handy for reading the license plate # of someone who just rear-ended you.

Received it today. Very easy to install and works great for what I need. I have a DriveSmart 65 and the features on the GPS work well for my needs. It has different resolution options and I like the fact that the camera turns on automatically whenever the GPS unit is powered up. My 12 volt power is turned on with the ignition key so the GPS unit fires up as soon as I turn the car on - and the backup camera comes on approximately 5 to 8 seconds later. I do realize that this is not a theft proof option but I do have faith - time will tell. My karma is good so Im hoping for the best. I can't speak to longevity yet but so far with ease of installation and features and picture quality I'm very happy.

I love the mounting bracket because it make for a very easy and clean install. The camera can be removed without tools so theft may be a problem depending on where you park. It has a very wide view that is great when backing out into areas with lots of traffic. The bad news is the camera sometimes takes a lot of time to connect to GPS unit and freezes up a lot. I can't get through an entire week without getting an "unable to connect, replace batteries" message. This happens randomly even when batteries are fine so it gets really annoying. I have a cheaper rechargeable wireless camera that is much more reliable. Garmin has a great idea but needs to improve signal strength to make this a winner. Update March 2025 Even with new batteries it only connects maybe 20% of the time and getting worse. Down to one star for poor performance.

Sometimes it freezes when you need it most, but restores on its own after a few seconds. The biggest complaint I have read is the fact that it can be easily stolen. I agree and after seeing what others have done, to help prevent theft, I figured my own way. I put a screw on both sides to secure it. I used #12 x 1/4 inch wood screws to ensure the screws would not puncture through the unit to the batteries. I first drilled pilot holes about 1/4 inch deep so the screws would not "split" the plastic. see photo.

UPDATE - 5 STAR CUSTOMER SERVICE! After unit stopped working, called GARMIN customer support. Thrilled to talk with a helpful representative who was; a) U.S. based, and b) was a native English speaker. Replacement unit on its way to me. GARMIN provides GREAT customer service. Added this to an old car that already had a compatible GPS. Installation is simple, so is pairing. Voice commands work fine for on/off. Image at night is adequately bright, but depends on how strong your reverse-lights are. Biggest complaints: 1) Even a light rain distorts camera lens. 2) Backup camera has caused GPS unit to “freeze” a few times.

I like the idea of a backup camera that doesn't have to be professionally installed. But I was disappointed by the performance. Multiple connection failures. Too much -a-rounds with no definitive results. It just requires too much effort.

Ich hatte es 2013 bei unserem VW Tiguan versäumt eine Rückfahrkamera gleich mit zu bestellen. Immer häufiger kam der Wunsch auf eine Kamera nachrüsten zu lassen, aber alle sich hierzu bietenden Lösungen, auch die originale Nachrüstung waren mir zu teuer. Vor einem Jahr hatte ich mir schon einmal zu meinem „Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S EU“ die Garmin die BC30 bestellt, dies wäre bei unserem VW Tiguan ein erheblich größerer Aufwand gewesen diese einzubauen, habe sie dann wieder zurück gesendet. Dann entdeckte ich dieses Jahr die Garmin BC40.. die eine fast perfekte einfache und nicht zu teure Nachrüstung bietet und habe sie mir kurzer Hand bestellt. Ein großer Vorteil gegenüber allen anderen Lösungen eine Rückfahrkamera nachzurüsten, sie braucht nicht verkabelt werden. Die mitgelieferte EU Kennzeichenhalterung hat an einer Längsseite eine Halterung in die die Kamera eingeklinkt wird, ob man nun die Kennzeichenhalterung so montiert das die Halterung an der Unterseite oder Oberen Seite liegt muss man von Fahrzeug zu Fahrzeug entscheiden. Ich habe sie bei unserem VW Tiguan an der Oberen Seite positioniert und musste nur die Neigung entsprechend noch einstellen. Durch den enormen Weitwinkelbereich der Kamera sieht man förmlich alles, selbst „das“ was man beim einfachen zurückschauen nicht sehen würde und ist somit immer auf der sicheren Seite das man nicht etwas übersieht. Für mich ist es noch in zweiter Hinsicht von Nutzen, da wir häufig mit einem Bootstrailer unterwegs sind. Hier bietet mir die Kamera eine enorme Hilfestellung beim zurücksetzen um den Kugelkopf der Anhängerkupplung zu sehen. Ich habe die Hilfslinien abgeschaltet.. das muss aber jeder für sich entscheiden. Beim einschalten der Zündung schaltet sich das Navi ein und startet sofort mit der Rückfahrkamera. Ein automatisches umschalten auf die Kartenansicht ist nur dann der Fall, wenn man sich im Navigationsmodus befindet, ist dies nicht der Fall muss man auf die Kartenansicht von Hand umschalten. Was ich schade finde, dass es über die Software bei unserem „Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S EU“ nicht die Möglichkeit gibt die Video-Qualität noch anders einzustellen, das soll ja laut Aussage von Garmin bei einigen kompatiblen Garmin Navis der Falls sein. Obwohl ich über die Video-Qualität beim „Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S EU“ nicht wirklich negatives sagen kann. Sie ist ausreichend, auch bei Dunkelheit und man sieht alles. Eine höhere Auflösung wäre allerdings nicht schlecht und man würde alles noch detaillierter und schärfer sehen. Nachstehend mein Plus/Minus Bewertung: + Einfache Montage + Gute Qualität + Einfache Installation und Anbindung ans Navi + Keine Verkabelung nötig - Kann leicht gestohlen werden - Videoqualität nicht bei allen Garmin Navis möglich Wie lange die Lithium AA Batterien halten kann ich gegenwärtig noch nicht sagen. Ich habe die Kamera jetzt seit Anfang Dezember eingebaut.. mal schauen wie lange sie halten.. aber wie gesagt dies bezieht sich auf die von Garmin empfohlenen Lithium AA Batterien und nicht auf herkömmliche AA Batterien.. die werden wahrscheinlich nicht so lange halten. Eigentlich wollte ich einen Stern abziehen weil man in meinem Garmin DriveSmart 61 die Videoqualität nicht besser einstellen kann, aber das betrifft ja nicht das hier bewertete Produkt sondern würde sich auf das Garmin Navi beziehen.. daher volle Punktzahl. Bis jetzt bin ich mit der Rückfahrkamera super zufrieden, und kann sie jedem empfehlen.

Not obtrusive, easy set up. Delighted with it

accoppiata con il navigatore dal mio camper (7,30mt) funziona molto bene. bisogna solo ricordarsi di rimuoverla ogni volta perchè staccandosi con facilità si rischia che piaccia troppo alla gente di passaggio .... anche se l'ho montata bella in alto (oltre 3mt)

La compré para usarla con un coche con un culo largo y poca visibilidad (C70). Me pareció interesante su funcionamiento sin cables aunque tuve que comprar un navegador Garmin compatible. Total unos 300€. Como puntos positivos destaca: 1. Su facilidad de instalación: Solo hace falta un destornillador. 2. La calidad de la imagen, con o sin luz. 3. Amplio campo de visión. Como puntos negativos: 1. El precio. 2. Lag o retardo excesivo cuando se usa en zonas con interferencias (para esos días que aparcas en la playa a reventar). Por el precio seguramente habría considerado antes unos sensores de aparcamiento, pero la compra ya está hecha. Relativamente satisfecho pero el tema del lag me ha dejado roto y ninguna opinión lo había mencionado antes.
