Better Than Sex: Confessions of a Political Junkie (Gonzo Papers, vol. 4)

I am going to start with the book but stay tuned for my evaluation of the seller. This is the 4th offering of the Gonzo papers and in some ways it’s my favorite volume. In other ways all the lines blur between gonzo journalism and exceptional tall tales with no hint of fact to ruin the story. I grew up watching Walter Cronkite and when he delivered the news I knew he was telling the absolute truth and had proof to support what he was saying. There were dozens of journalists in the field and studios that shared important information with the American public and had faith that the American people would be smart enough to come to their own conclusions. There were satirists who had an opinion and delivered public spankings while maintaining that it was one person’s opinion. Their job was to don the jester’s cap while pointing out the emperor was indeed naked. HST was the first journalist that wrote himself into the story so he could write from his perspective and say anything that he wanted. I don’t doubt that he did not consume vast amounts of drugs and alcohol but they did serve well as a beard. Pay the ticket, enjoy the show. Read the eulogy HST gave for Richard Nixon. It was a fine piece of writing. As for the seller, I paid a ridiculously low price for the paperback offset with only moderately excessive postage and handling charges. It arrived early in very good condition even though it was sold as good. Tiny foxing on lower right front cover but the binding was pristine. Excellent product, excellent service. Top marks all around

Thought I'd start the year by reading some of last Great American Writer ... always helps to get the mental juices flowing. This book, remarkably free of drugs, follows the fall of George Bush and the rise of Bill Clinton. Luckily, HST is there to keep us on the proper even keel, even when we choose what looks like the lesser of two evils. The book also includes Thompson's legendary obituary for his longtime nemesis Richard Nixon. This just reminds me why American journalism ceased to be relevant after February 5, 2005. Excellent book.

This was my first venture into the mind of Hunter Thompson. I don't think anyone who was not alive to live the 90's would fully understand the unique view of the great Dr., but that is the only bad thing I have to say. Great book, it kept me up way too late reading rather than sleeping more than one night over the past week.

Even HST's mediocre work is far more entertaining than many other authors.

If you remember this era, it's almost as awesome read as "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72" Reading Thompson is way better than the poor film attempts that just don't get it

Loved it!! hilarious read ~ yet contains some real nuggets of wisdom! as current today as it was when originally penned!

Another great by Hunter S Thompson and an interesting view of the Clinton's as we head into the 2016 election

Definitely one of my favorite books. If you're a Hunter Thompson fan and have not read this book I highly recommend it.

The one thing that I have Always loved about H.S.T's work, is the fact that he was absolutely right when it came to American politics. Plus, I have always been fascinated by how he was able to get right to the point, while being in a state of, (Shall We say), Being in a rather Stoned State of being. The Man was just Amazing!!., and that's why I was always a HUGE FAN of his. Plus this Book brings back a lot of Memories of My experiences in this life. I've ACTUALLY forgotten about just how much I used to REALLY HATE RICHARD NIXON!!...with his Outlawing of Drugs, at the same time as I was just growing up!!., and then finding out later, that he did it just to make sure that he had enough Volunteers to go off to Vietnam!!. I love the eulogy that Hunter s Thompson wrote in this book for Nixon. WOW!!. and beyond that, I don't want to give too much away. I love this Book, and that's all I can say.

One of the good Doctor's finest,the race for the White house between George Bush and Bill (I didn't inhale) Clinton I found this book very funny,The Doctor is backing Mr Clinton,but when he interviews him in Arkansas he get's a frosty reception.It turns out Thompson is a dead ringer of a bully from a white trash family whom Clinton hated. Thompson also hates to admit this,but he says that at least George Bush has a sense of humour There are many frantic letters written by Thompson and many are sent to the Editor of Rolling Stone Magazine where he is trying to get the Rock'n'roll vote in favour of cigar chompin' Bill "Fear and loathing on the campaign trail '72" was lost on me because I didn't know many of the politicians,but all the good ol' Republicans are here including Mr Baker Yes,one of the Doctor's finest political books with many a laugh ! Gonzo rules

I was thrilled to get a new copy of this book in hardcover. Probably the 4th book I have read by Hunter S Thompson. I did not enjoy it as much as Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Hell’s Angels, or Fear & Loathing On The Campaign Trail 72’, still a great read and had me laughing. I will look to Amazon 3rd party sellers for other hard cover editions of books that are hard to find in Canada.

Bought this when I was a pretentious uni student. Still pretentious but no longer at uni. Never got round to reading it and probably wouldn't love it anymore, but ah well - let's give it 5 stars anyway.
