Green Onion Miso Soup
I love miso soup and the ones I usually get at like the grocery stories are powder mixes and this one is the paste. I think the first time I made it I added too much water ( I filled a coffee mug full of water) but the flavor was still good to me. It has two parts to it. These one pack that has the dried veggies, the onions, seaweed and I think a couple egg pieces. Then the miso paste is separate. I added the packets first and then the hot water and let it sit for a min or two to let the veggies rehydrate. Me personally I like the flavor and eat dried seaweed no problem, but I am not crazy about the texture of seaweed in my soups. I like the flavor so I did not eat it, I'm weird like that. But I love the flavor combination and its just the right amount of soup for a quick snack or just before a homemade Asian meal I would make for my family

Same as the items found at the Asian Market
I shopped with a friend at the Asian Market in the city when I was visiting and bought this soup. I tried finding I went I came home, but I live in a small town. I was happy to find this item on Amazon and was presently surprised it was the same brand as the one I had previously bought in the store. It delicious, super easy to make and easy to pack for a lunch.

Souper yummy
Love these easy and simple soup/garnish packets. The flavor is really yummy just add water. I bought these solely based on reviews -not really knowing what I was going to get. I'm glad I took the chance. I had also bought another popular brand but I prefer this one instead! The other was more mild. These packets come safely secured in the main packaging. Everything looks safe and clean which I like esp since the packaging isn't in English. If I can recall, each packet has the name of the flavor in English...and that's about it. :) going to eat soup now thanks!

Be aware of a mildly fishy taste and smell with some instant miso brands. (SEE PHOTOS.)
Overall, this is good "instant" miso. Of course, it will never be as good as fresh miso cut from a block of paste in a restaurant - but it's a good "stand in" when you want decent miso NOW. -------------- CONS - * Many instant miso brands add powdered bonito (tuna) or similar powdered fish products to their miso paste. Check the ingredients. Most Japanese restaurants use refrigerated miso paste to make pots of miso - and nothing else. They will add things like green onions or tofu and seaweed for more flavoring - and some might even toss in a small pressed fish cake/slice to float on top. But it's uncommon to be served a bowl of fresh miso - that has any hint of fish in the soup base. I was put-off at first by the mildly fishy smell and wondered what it was. I didn't realize that this is among the many instant brands which adds powdered fish to its miso base. (Still tasted good - but it was jarring at first.) If you want something that tastes closer to restaurant miso soup - get instant brands which have NO fish products mixed into the paste. (Side note: "powdered kombu" is OK. That's simply powdered seaweed or kelp that is found in many Japanese dishes.) * Know that MSG (monsodium glutamate) is a foundational ingredient that is still found in many Asian dishes. Very difficult to avoid. I personally have never had a reaction to it and have yet to meet a friend who passed out or got a rash or whatever because of it. This is not really a knock on the product as MSG is hard to avoid in Asian foods. In fact, if you demand that MSG be excluded - it's probably a Western-style Asian restaurant that will accommodate you more readily. * Know that miso soup is NOT a low-sodium food. Most soups aren't and miso is no exception. -------------- PROS - * Miso paste is vacuum-sealed in a foil packet. It is not powdery nor freeze-dried. It comes out as a thick liquid base as if cut from a refrigerated block - and then sealed so that room temperature doesn't hurt freshness. * Garnish is surprisingly good. After you add hot water - LET IT SIT FOR A FULL MINUTE and watch the "unfurling show" - as the dried seaweed and onions re-hydrate into nice large chunks. * You can add MORE than the 2/3rds water recommended per serving. I now double that - and sometimes I'll add a little salt if I overdo it. This feels more like a true full-serving of miso - and not some kid's portion that you can down in just two gulps. The re-hydrated garnish and constant stirring required for miso - spreads the flavor around fabulously. By adding more water, you may find that you won't have to "double" the number of miso and garnish packets into one bowl. * If you want to turn this into a meal - add a little bit of microwave rice to turn it into a hearty soup. Or if you feel daring, add a bit of "udon" - (soft buckwheat noodles) and boom - you've just created a trendier type of "saimen" that is a staple of Japanese meals. Either way, this fills me up enough that I can sometimes skip dinner.

Just like in Japan!!
Travel to Japan often and this miso is exactly like what my miso in Japan tastes like! Always keep it on hand. Individual servings in foil packets. Use before expiration dates!

Smells gross, tastes gross
This soup was disgusting. It smells gross, it tastes gross, and I got kicked out of the break room at work where I was trying to make this soup because my colleagues couldn't stand the smell. It tastes like unseasoned algae soup. Like if you went out to a highly polluted lake and pulled some algae off the floor of the lake, put it in a bowl and added water, that's what it tastes like. I might eat this if I were starving in a survival situation, or I might just go try to forage literally anything else, like anything else that is edible.

Salty
Tasted too salty to us but it had decent miso flavor.

Convenient!
I am big on organic and natural foods but I must say that since I don't eat instant foods often, I treat myself to these miso soups on occasion. Its quick, tasty and hearty. Not so great for you ingredients but I try to have everything in moderation w/o feeling deprived of anything and that is the key to emotional and physical health I think. I normally make everything from scratch & organic but its very tasty when you are craving miso soup and need it asap. The best way to prepare the soup is to make sure the water is boiling, pour over emptied packet of the dehydrated seaweeds, onions and dehydrated and fried soy strips in a bowl. I let steep for a bit until all the ingredients are soft and than add the soup base pack, stir and enjoy with meals.
