Unique twist on an old tradition
This is a wonderful idea book for making all sorts of prayer beads for all sorts of traditions. Of course, it is also a jump off point for designing things with your own special style. Great gifting idea for those special ones in your life that follow the Old Ways.

A Learning Experience
This is a very imformative book not only for those interested in the use of prayer beads but also for those wanting to learn to make their own prayer beads. This book has a brief history of prayer beads and it's uses in many religions. It includes the symbolism used: colors, shapes, stones, numbers. Druid rosaries (Revival and Celtic Reconstructionism), Wiccan rosaries, and other special interests rosaries. It explains in very simple terms how to make your own prayer beads> There is a section on spells and chants that may used with your rosaries. It's endless what one can do with this. As far as the comments made on the photographs being b/w, really, use your imagination! It may be why it's in black and white.

Rather helpful actually
This book is not the be-all, end-all, but it's a good jumping off point for people who wish to make their own prayer beads and are a little lost on how to begin, or even just how to use them. Some of the stuff is rather obvious, but there's some interesting points (prayer beads on a hair dangle? That's novel)! If you're looking to make prayer beads for yourself, others, or as a business, this book may be useful to you.

Disappointing with no color photos or any illustrations
The contents page looked as if this was what I'd been looking for: a comprehensive how-to guide. But it was overly simplistic in some areas ('string your beads on the cord one at a time....') while not giving details on more difficult issues (don't use a 'granny knot', but no good explanation of what knot to use). Only contains black-and-white pictures which show finished designs, but not any how-to's; it would have been dramatically better if close-up pictures or drawings had been used to illustrate. Overly detailed descriptions on how many of what beads for what design, but again, no illustrations of the process of securing in different ways. That said the book does give some good basic info on symbolism, choosing materials and basic beading how-to's. It was also nice to have a decidedly non-Catholic view of the ancient use of beads for praying and meditation.

Emphasis on craft not use
I was surprised to find the emphasis placed on how to make the beads and not how to use them. I liked the tips on how to choose material suitable for the purpose - making sure the dye that doesn't rub off, that beads feel nice and don't have sharp edges, fraying of string vs stiffness of wire etc. But I would have liked a larger compilation of prayers! I also would have liked at least a few photos I'm colour. All in all this is not a book that screams "pick me up and read me"
