Midquel I
Of all the anime series in the Misused Semicolon Universe, Steins;Gate is by far the best. (In contrast Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child are too gruesome and Robotics;Notes is too boring IMHO.) Until Steins;Gate 0, (not counting the never released four IBM commercial shorts) it had consisted of the 24 episode TV series plus 1 OVA episode “Egoistic Poriomania” (both included on Steins;Gate plus Steins;Gate: The Movie - Load Region of Déjà Vu ; however, this new series Steins;Gate 0 basically squeezed in another 25 episodes right before the final two episodes of the original series, thus, the term midquel. (Like most viewers I suspected upon watching the first series that they had skipped over quite a bit in order to develop all the surprises that showed up in that amazing original 23rd episode, but I never imagined this much!)As displayed in the altered episode 23β “Divide by Zero” that starts this whole thing, Okabe gives up instead of making one last try after failing to save Kurisu in the original episode 23; the next 24 episodes, which include one OVA episode “Valentine’s of Crystal Polymorphism: Bittersweet Day”, show how he brought himself back from despair and set up the win over Time itself. He makes a number of new friends (including one new Lab Member and another one “revived”) and deals with red herrings, secret conspiracies, and Yet Another time convergence point (or two) that he must wriggle around in the process, before fighting his way back to finish the original series. In this Part One, both in the Limited Edition and in the Regular Edition , Okabe, having failed once, gives up on trying to save Kurisu, deciding once again to listen to her wish that at the (seemingly) unbeatable time convergence point she be left dead while Mayuri be left alive in a world without time travel, at least without time travel instigated by them. However, as Suzuha knows quite intimately a horrific World War III is coming in this timeline fought ABOUT time travel, which will kill upwards of 5.7 billion people,... including her own mother…. The story continues in Steins;Gate 0: Part Two .Note: Because this series is a midquel unless you have watched the first series, don’t even bother; lacking either a beginning or an ending, it won’t really make any sense to you. Essentially, it replaces the remarkable, whiplash-inducing original episode 23 with an entirely new season to stretch the story out. After being suspicious of the concept and confused by the online English subtitled version, I was prepared to dislike it (or at least like it a lot less than I liked the rest of the series), but after hearing the brilliant English voice acting job, once again performed largely by the same people as before, I both understood it much better and enjoyed it much more! (I even think the two different English subtitled versions, on Blu-ray and DVD, were much improved!) Even the usually useless Voice Commentary episodes (available only on Blu-ray) were interesting to listen to here because they revealed how the gut-punching script frequently turned the actors and actresses into crying mush putting it into action; drama with a capital D!Note: The timeline gets more than a little confused so this is arguably the best order to watch everything in:Steins;Gate TV episodes 1-22,Steins;Gate 0 OVA episode 23β,Steins;Gate 0 TV episodes 1-13,Steins;Gate 0 OVA called episode 24,Steins;Gate 0 TV episodes 14-23,Steins;Gate TV episodes 23-24,Steins;Gate IBM commercial shorts 1-4,Steins;Gate OVA called episode 25,Steins;Gate Movie.Note: The choice of Limited or Regular edition for Part One of this largely depends on how much of a fan of Steins;Gate you are. I found the 120-page Art Book a little disappointing because it primarily contained… “art”; 23 pages of Glossary and 17 pages of Interviews don’t really add up to much IMHO. Meanwhile, the “goodies” consist of an Amadeus cellphone stand, a Fairy Upa cellphone strap, and 6 art cards; for me the primary attraction is the beautiful box, which provides room for storing the Part Two Blu-ray/DVD box alongside the Part One Blu-ray/DVD box and the Art Book, once you remove the “goodies”.

The story is complicated , but it's a great series..
It is best to watch the entire series. I purchased the entire series several years ago and never regret the purchase. The story, the sound effects, colors were great; the story line will keep you interest in the entire series. Hang in there to the very end.

An extension to the visual novel, highly recommend both. Play the VN first
I feel like some of the negative reviews don’t have enough context. If you’re familiar with the visual novel, this is essentially a great new worldline/ending. With everything in perspective it’s truly amazing, however I can see how without playing Steins;Gate 0 you could be disappointed. I’d suggest view this as an extension of the visual novel. It’s not a true 1:1 adaptation in the sense that it’s exactly like the VN, it’s more like an unexplored worldline that elaborates upon the whole.

Not Steins;Gate Season 3 if that's what you're looking for
WTH is this? This is NOT Steins;Gate season 3. Upon research, there is no Steins;Gate season 3.This *seems* to be Steins;Gate 0 season 2. Maybe. So don't start watching it thinking it's S;G S3.It's still more than a bit incongruous with the rest of the series. I did some reading and see that S;G0 is an alternate ending but IMO they really decimated the characters.

meanders and filled with non essential fluff that's silly
Not as good as Steins;Gate, Steins Gate 0 starts off OK, then drags until the last few episodes. Filled with kiddy fluff, the story gets of track and never really resolves. It reverts back to Stiens;Gate, original, so this is seen as taking place during Steins; Gate on a different world line. 1/3 of the episodes could be eliminated and the story line would be better paced. This is like a never ending Greek tragedy, but as mentioned, It takes place during Steins; Gate so that ending is really the ending for this series.

Show fine, craptacula release
Unskipable add for Funimation Now (which isn't actually available in the UK), locked language options. For the cost of the whole series you can get a streaming subscription for a year which gives you access to it and much more content. Us mugs that still want physical releases are like unicorns, if we keep getting shoddy products there will be none of us left.

Great 1st half to an awesome series
Steins;Gate 0 is an alternate sequel to the original Steins;Gate, where events turn out differently to how the original series ended. Episode 23 Beta is included in this release, which means you can watch episode 1-22 of the original Steins;Gate and then watch Ep 23B, which is the prologue for Steins;Gate 0.The gang is back here with some new characters we haven't seen before and it's great to see the story pan out in a different worldline than the one we saw in the original storyline. Episode 8 is the standout episode in the 1st half of Steins;Gate 0. Very well written, emotional and intriguing.

What if alternate realities do indeed excist?
Okarin from first series Steins Gate, that seemed to have a happy ending, finds out in this great sequel,in wich this alternate reality occurs,in wich his collegue and girlfriend, wich he was not able to save, even not after many futile attempts,by repeatedly returning to the past, now in the present seems to excist only as an artificial intelligence.A serious warning to all mad scientists who plan to meddle with time, wich does alas not allow any paradoxes!Great series for all mad scientist that like time-travel,though it is claimed to be utterly impossible! Can recommend it!
