is to keep my toddler out while still having relatively easy access to a firearm in the unlikely event that ...
I purchased this product to store a firearm after we had our first child. I keep a pistol, magazine, and a flashlight in this safe and I store it under the bed. The purpose of this safe, for me, is to keep my toddler out while still having relatively easy access to a firearm in the unlikely event that I need it. It is not theft proof, bullet proof, unhackable, or fool proof. It does, however, keep little infant hands away from your firearms. The bio-metric system is easy to program and works pretty much every time. I programmed each finger on both of my hands and my wife's hands. It seems to work every time. The safe opens quickly and fairly quietly. It is not loud at all, but you can hear the bars rolling back. You can open the safe after about 1.5 seconds. If you want a heavy-duty, theft-proof, anti-paranoia safe...this is not for you and you will need to spend more money and get something heavier and bolt it to the floor. If you want a high quality safe that will keep little toddler hands out while being easy to open when intended for a decent price...this is what you have been looking for. It works very well for what it is. I have no problems opening it. My kid cannot get into it. I am happy with this purchase.

Reliable, Quality Product. Use new batteries and follow the instructions!
Packaging: Well packaged in a protective bag, inside a cardboard box, with cardboard packing inside a second box with Barska markings. Quality: The quality seems very nice, especially for the price. No lid rubbing as others have noted. Function: I thought my first two attempts to register fingerprints were successful since it beeped the correct number of times, but any finger would open the safe. If you read the instructions, this means fingerprint registration failed. I think many of the 1-star ratings with customers complaining that any finger will open the safe did not read the instructions, or may have been using old batteries that came with it. On my third attempt to register a fingerprint, it beeped differently and worked. I may not have gotten my finger on the scanner quickly enough or did not hold it still enough the first two times. After registering several fingers, it has always opened on the first try with a registered finger and will not open with a non-registered finger (as desired). I have tried placing my finger at different angles and it will still unlock unless half of my finger is off of the scanner. I am 100% impressed with the fingerprint reader so far. Included: 4 AA batteries were included but I replaced these right away after having read reviews of problem batteries. The ad indicates a dual hydraulic hinge but it is actually pneumatic door open assist, like you would see on an SUV tailgate (only smaller!). If the batteries die: 1) The key can be used to unlock the safe but not to relock it (upon locking, the key cannot be removed). 2) The fingerprint memory is retained. 3) The pink jack can be used to provide external power. You will need a 1/8" mono phono plug and a 6VDC power supply. You can easily make one for $6 + tax + 4 AA batteries (see RadioShack parts #274-286 and #270-391 or similar). Note that the polarity requires positive (+) on the plug tip and negative (-) on the plug sleeve.

Great Safe; Shipped with dead batteries
The safe shipped in good condition and with decent instructions (including how to turn off the sounds/beeps that the safe makes which I've read other reviewers complain about). The safe is solid (good steel construction), a great size (fits into the drawer of my chest in my room), and appears difficult to break into (I'm no expert in such things though). I'm confident that, at a minimum, it will keep my children from my firearm which is my primary criteria. Only complaint is that my initial attempts to register fingerprints and work safe failed. This led ten minutes of frustration with the device. The registration light was on, however, it would not register fingerprints and would not lock/unlock as described in the instructions. I ultimately decided to remove the batteries that shipped with the safe and insert four of my own batteries. This did the trick. The safe worked perfectly. It is easy to register fingerprints. So far it recognizes the five that I registered with zero problems. Overall, I'm very happy with the safe. I would have given it five stars had it shipped with good batteries.

Great product for easy access and keeping your kids safe
Good product! I have this box sitting on my night stand next to my bed. I keep my loaded pistols in it. I use this product almost daily as one of the pistols is my regular concealed carry. I have a 4 year old child at home and feel safe using this device to keep prying eyes and little fingers away. There are two things to consider when buying this product: 1. Does it keep your gun safe from children? Yes, absolutely. I see no way a toddler is going to fake an adults finger print. The box even has safeguards such as an alarm that sounds if you accidentally leave it open. It is also long lasting on battery life. 2. Does this lock box provide you with reliable quick access to your firearm should you need it immediately? My answer to this is a 97% yes. The only time I have had this box fail to open on the first pass is when the finger print reader or my finger was dirty. Some people want 100% on this such as a 4 tumbler combination lock. I am willing to trade my almost perfect open rate for the peace of mind that my kid isn't going to be able to guess my combination. I can also use this by touch in the dark without issues, something I doubt I could do as well with a combination. I also believe that in self defense your adrenaline is going to steal most people's fine motor skills. Working a combination lock will be more difficult under these circumstances. With this product you just push the activation button and hold your finger down. You can load many views of your finger tips into this device. That way you don't have to worry about exact finger placement as it will know your finger by its side or crooked angle. It doesn't care if you are nervous or pressing too hard. It's too simple to mess up. My wife and I are both dialed into the finger print reader on multiple fingers. Eventually, I will own more handguns and have more than one of these in a different part of the house. I stand by this product to keep my family safe. I have owned this product for over a year now. It is holding up just fine and my results are consistently the same. 2019 Update. 5+ years later and still no complaints. I will be buying my second one for my wife's concealed carry soon.

Best bedside handgun safe. Quick and quiet access while keeping little hands off of your handgun.
You must look at a safe from a perspective of your needs. I now have a small child and needed a safe to secure a handgun, nothing more. My needs were that it needed to be secure enough to keep curious hands out of it, while allowing me quick access to it if need be. I did not need a fire rated safe or one that was large enough to prevent someone from carrying it away in my absence. After doing my research, it was between a biometric safe or one with a push button combination lock. Both would allow me to quickly access it in the dark. Several of the push button safes seem to have several videos out on the web on how to defeat the locking mechanism. Long story short, after reading multiple reviews on this Barska safe, I decided to give it a try. You can buy a larger Barska biometric safe for just a few dollars more (front opening instead of top opening), but for me, I would only end up storing more "stuff" in it which could be carried off by a intruder. Again, I had to remind myself of my needs and not wanting to get the most bang for my buck. This safe has been perfect...for me, and fits in my drawer. The first safe I ordered was damaged, the second one had locking bolts that were not functioning property but third time is a charm. The measurements do not include the fingerprint scanner on the top. It's roughly 14 3/4" wide, 11 3/8" deep and 6 1/8" high (including the scanner on top). Initially the safe can be opened with any fingerprint until you program it. You must first unscrew the name badge and use the key to disengage the locking bolts. Once you program your fingerprints, you're in business. I had no problems programming my fingerprints. You can scan dozens of fingerprints but I chose to scan a few of my digits on each hand due to the chance of having a hand injury and/or blood on them. I scanned each of my common fingers several times in slightly different positions to eliminate the chance of losing a few seconds due to a bad fingerprint scan. I also followed the instructions and silenced the audible tones during a scan. I can say I have yet to have a "bad" scan. I access the safe twice a day and I have always unlocked the safe with the first and only scan. I can open the safe in 2-3 seconds (activate the scan, scan and lift it open). I've allowed several other's to try to open the safe (fingerprints not programed) and they all were denied access. The safe comes with bolts to secure the bottom of the safe to the floor. I chose to simply tuck it away in a drawer next to my bed. Again, I'm more concerned about the potential of little hands finding my handgun than the unlikely chance of someone getting my the alarm system and walking away with it. If I had any complaints, it would be that the two shocks on the lid do not spring the lid open like I expected. They simply hold the lid position where you left it (opened partially or fully open). This was not a real issue for me.

Much better than I expected, but...
I am one of the few people who didn't purchase this safe to store guns. Not that I have anything against them, I just had other uses in mind. Uses that don't require split-second opening time. To that, I believe that if this is the reason you are buying this safe, it would work fine for that purpose. Once you disable the sound, you can open this safe quickly and quietly without fumbling, and would be a fine place to store an emergency handgun. However, I don't really need this, so I am rating the product on a different scale. The safe was easy to program, and has worked perfectly for me with only one scan of each finger I intend to use. One scan of a typically placed finger has enabled me to open the safe with that finger slightly raised, elevated, leaned either direction, turned slightly in either direction, and with various pressure. It will not open to other fingers or any simulation of such that I have tried so far. Simply, the safe opens great. I am not as impressed with the strength of the safe. It works fine for my needs, but I have been the victim of enough break-ins and friendly-thefts to know that if someone wants in, they will get in. The bolts are very strong and a bit over-kill for the box itself, in my mind. A pry bar will easily open the sides enough to at least see inside, if not fish something out. It will take a bit of work, and definitely noise to do so. It will take even more work to get the door completely open to get out a larger item, such as a gun. The hidden keyhole is a bit obvious to me, and I think most to would-be thieves as well. Of course, finding the keyhole is not going to get you inside, and as long as the key is not near to the safe, or known to the thieves, this doesn't matter. The one real concern I have is with the two un-advertised and un-mentioned 3.5mm jacks that are exposed right on the face of the safe by the fingerprint reader. It is obvious they are there for some type of electronic by-pass or diagnostics purpose. The fact that they are there does not upset me as much as the fact that they are not ever mentioned by the manufacturer. I imagine there are quite a few ex-employees of the manufacturer as well as resourceful geeks that could use this 'back-door' to simply flip a switch and access your valuables in a snap. I am not overly paranoid, so I am not really afraid of this happening to me, but I wanted to make it known, because I am willing to bet it has or will happen to one of you. This is the reason for my three stars. It would have been 4-5 if they had mentioned, explained, or removed these unwanted access points. Otherwise, I am totally satisfied with my purchase. Good luck with yours.

I'm pleased. Slightly impressed ...
Impressed! I read the reviews here and did some research regarding a few different safes prior to this purchase. This one seemed like a good purchase due to the firearms I have around the house. I received the item in good condition and began immediately to read the supplied instructions. Not bad instructions, but nothing extreme either. I was easily able to get this figured out in a few minutes of messing around with it. I programmed all of my fingers and thumbs. I programmed my wife and then I programmed mine again ... let's face it ... I don't want this thing to "Computer Says No" on me during that important moment. I began testing and never experienced one single fail. I'm sold. Let me try again in 6 months and I'll let you know, but during the test run I found it to be accurate and pleasing. I tested the supplied key and we popped the keys on our keychains. The good lord knows if I have to rely on that stinkin' key in that time of need ... I'm 90% sure this cute lil' review will turn to the ugly. Eh, you may not see a return reply to this review. Regardless, I'm planning to mount this puppy to the floor and if a thief plans to crawl under the house and try to dismantle and/or dismount this thang ... then ... well, he/she can have it. As to the heftiness of it ... I truly believe if you gave me the tools to get into it, I could in. Would I destroy the contents ... nah, you'd have to be a little creative and I'm 87.3% I'd successfully pull it off. Do I truly believe a thief would go for that after having to pry it off of my floor ... I think not. He/she'd most likely bash it a few times and give it a whirl, but would most-likely come up with nothing, but a few minutes of disgust and regret. Pretty impressed with the build. Confident the safe will be here when I get back home. Let's face it, this is my approach to hiding and securing my non-carry, non-hidden home defense pistol. I recommend this product so far. I will revisit this review in a few shorts months and let you know if I had the expected results whilst trying to test my fingerprints and mounting it to the floor accordingly. Praying you all stay safe! {pun totally intended}

Quality build and very easy to operate.
I just received my safe, 6/1 after ordering saturday, 5/30. So far I'm impressed with the quality. I easily registered 3 fingerprints and the safe will not open on any non-registered fingerprints. The size is perfect for my bedside table drawer and it holds 3 handguns, their holsters, and ammo nicely with room for more. The safe conveniently came with the 4 AA batteries so there was no need to purchase any. I read another review where the safe was locked and they returned it because of that. This one was also locked but the emergency keys and tool was outside and packaged with the batteries and floor anchors so I was able to gain entry rather easily in order to install the batteries and register my fingerprints. The beeps are somewhat loud but can be silenced unlike some others so that's no issue for me. The hydraulic door springs work very well in assisting with opening the door and keeping it open for easy access. I hope this helps in making an informed purchase decision as I recommend this safe for the ease of use and quality construction.

Great Safe!
First time going with a fingerprint safe, and first time with this brand. Came a few days late, but thatโs the shipping companyโs fault and Amazon gave me some money back for it. Mounting was easy into our floor. Set up was made simple and the prints work MOST of the time. Make sure to set multiple prints on your two hands so if one finger doesnโt work another will. I got fire and waterproof pouches to put our documents in, and my pistol fits in nicely as well. Huge space saver!
