A History Lesson for Every Day of the Year

This book is an amazing compilation of the events of WWII day by day. The articles range from the 1920s though the 1940s, giving insight into what happened in different theatres of the war--Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, among others. For those history aficionados of the war, this is a book that focuses its lens on such unknown or little publicized events as when President Roosevelt sent troops to occupy Greenland (April 10, 1941), and then reinforces well-known histories such as the revolt of the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw (April 19, 1943) or the fierce naval battle for the island of Guadalcanal (November 12, 1942).It is easy to scroll through because every article is categorized by the day of the month. It is well-researched and written in concise, understandable language with a great deal of background information.

WWII Up-close and Personal

This may be the only book of its kind about World War II, not an overall history, not indepth on a particular aspect, but a collection of stories and photos highlighing individual vingettes, people and events cataloged by day of the year.I especially like how the author brings readers right into the scene; for instance, on December 26, 1943 in the Battle of Cape Gloucester, located in the Bismark Archipelago in the Southwest Pacific.Monsoons of up to 16 inches of rain fell in one day, flooding foxholes. Haskett writes from a soldier's viewpoint, "Wet uniforms never really dried...suffered continually from fungus infections...Mosquito-borne malaria...'little black ants, little red ants, big red ants...even the caterpillars bite."Or you might read about a particular soldier, like 20-year-old 2nd Lt. Audie Murphy who became the most decoratted soldier in U.S. history.Asked later in life how he felt about killing 240 men, the number somehow arrived at by the army, Audie said, "To begin with, I didn't kill that many; how the hell does anyone think it felt? It didn't feel either way; good or bad. Feeling wasn't a luxury in the infantry."This is the kind of book you read in snitches, thumbing through. Clicking actually. It's an e-book you can read on your computer, Kindle, tablet or phone, perfect if you're waiting for an appointment. Got five minutes at the dentist's office? Read about the Eight Air Force sending 700 heavy bombers and 800 escort fighters to bomb Berlin. The Eighth Air Force suffered fully half of the U.S. Army Air Forces' casualties in the war. This book is incredibly well-researched, containing a wealth of information about World War II.

We must never forget......

As a citizen of Denmark sharing borders with Germany, having parents and family having been active parts of the WWII, this war is always present in my mind. I go to Germany often, I have lived in Brussels, Belgium which was severely affected by WWII, and I have visisted the invasion coast of Normandy more than once. (Actually I think every citizen in the world ought to pay this coast and it's museums and cemetaries a visit.)On that background I have a (bit more than) general interest in reading about the war, which must never be forgotten. This book, The Daily Chronicle of WWII, 365 days is the result of an immense research, and the result isn't less immense. It's a great book to make the reader wiser on the war in many aspects, it's tragedies and horrors and human loss, a great book to help us not to forget. Hopefully we won't and hopefully we and our politicians have become wiser and will be able to see the signs, which were ignored in the late thirties. Thanks for this great book Mr. Norman Haskett.

Amazing Research

This wonderfully-researched ebook about WWII reads like a reporter is writing about the daily events happening around the world before and during the war. Readers interested in all theaters of the war will thrive with the many details on each page. Though not laid out chronologically, each news story is focused on the most newsworthy event of the period in every theater of conflict. Amazing to me are the personal stories that relate the actions and plans put forth by the Non-Allied leaders. Historical photos and informative maps are plentiful.I heartily recommend this ebook.
