USimplySeason Xawaash Spice (4.8 oz) - East African Cuisine Inspired, Vibrant Blend, Perfect for Rubs, Marinades, and More - Vegan, Non-GMO, No-Salt, Made in USA

I've come across a couple of recipes calling for Xawaash (also known as Xawash) an herbal mixture originating from Somalia and Yemen. I like the flavor but have not found other Xawaash to compare it with. I checked two African Supermarkets here in town and neither had it or had heard of it. I ordered this from Amazon and have been pleased with the dishes I've made with it.

One of my sons is from Ethiopia and we love the cuisine. This spice mix is very tasty, and while I do use it in main dishes, I have found that it's great to use when I want to whip up a quick and flavorful side dish, such as a cold salad of white beans, tomatoes, and chick peas for example. Makes a delicious change from the usual (olive oil, a bit of sea salt, and pepper). It's definitely more flavorful than hot, which makes it approachable for people who can't take the heat of a mitmita for example. I will definitely order more of this when I run out. The review asked me to rate "Thickness" and "Warmth", which don't really make sense for a dry spice mix, but I gave them 5 stars anyway.

I ordered this spice mix because I was looking for new flavors in my cooking. It tastes like a curry, but different from other curries I've had. I use a generous amount on sautéed vegetables or potatoes. I think it's very delicious. It has some spice but not an excessive amount. There is no salt added. I only gave it 4 stars because I ordered the 4.8 ounce and received the 2.4 ounce. It's too bad because it's so good that it won't last very long.

This is the best tasting seasoning I ever had. Glad to have it in my kitchen at my first apartment. Made cheffing it up so much more good like heaven.

I purchased this to make some recipes from the Bibi’s kitchen cookbook. Creating this seasoning from scratch was honestly a little more work than I wanted to put into it. While I can’t comment on whether the flavor is authentic, I will say that we thought our meals turned out delicious. I will also say that had I realized I’d use so much of this (like 2 Tbsp per recipe) I would’ve purchased the larger size.

I used this to cook Somali food and was not disappointed. Despite the fact that many of the ingredients can be found in other spice blends, to my palate there is nothing like Xawa'ash. I have cooked food from all over the world and have explored the dishes of many cultures in all my years of cooking yet using this blend gave me a taste sensation that I have never before experienced. I highly recommend this stuff!

Hawa Hassan made her family's version of Somali Pasta for Bon Appetit. I ordered this blend to try to make it. The recipe came out delicious so I keep making it. This blend is a nice shortcut to get to the flavor for the sauce; you can keep adding more of the same blend or add more cumin or other spice within xawaash to taste.

Great smell but mediocre taste.
