Q: I have read the installation manual on line. It appears the water from the water heater tank is both drawn from and returned from the drain. right?

Hello,yes that is correct. The bottom feed connector is specially designed to allow the water to be drawn from the bottom of the tank and returned in such a way that the hotter water will go into the tank and not be drawn back out. Q: How do you prevent this system from removing heat from the water heater in the winter? Just unplug the pumps?

Hello, If you insulate the lines to and from the panel the system will always be adding heat to the water heater as long as the sun is out. Losses only happen when there is poor insulation on the lines. The panels are specifically designed to minimize heat loss. Actually the point of a freeze protected system like this is to be able to operate in the winter as well. Obviously it has to be sunny for the system to operate, so if you live in a place that is mostly cloudy in the winter we suggest going with a non-freeze protected system and draining it before the first frost. If you do want to stop the system from operating for whatever reason you can disconnect the pumps and it will stop working. Thank You, Heliatos Solar

Q: How are we seprating the potable water from the circulated water in the pannels ?

Hello,The system uses a heat exchanger that completely separates the fluid in the solar loop from the potable water while conducting the heat from the solar into the water. The use of a food grade heat transfer fluid in the solar loop is mandated by law and assures that even if something goes wrong in the system your potable water is never contaminated.
