Langenscheidt Grosswoerterbuch Deutsch Als Fremdsprache: Das Einsprachige Worterbuch Fur Alle, Die Deutsch Lernen (German Edition)

This is a German only dictionary. I am at the B1 level and so far am able to use the dictionary just fine. Every word I looked up so far, around 50, had good explanations and sample sentences.I also like the fact that colloquial words are included (auf deutsch: Umgangssprache)So I highly recommend this dictionary for Intermediate and Advanced German learners.Beginners may be able to use it, but it would take some effort. The good thing is this dictionary can stay with you on your long journey to learn German at a high level.

I bought this on the recommendation of a you tube guy doing German language instruction videos. Personally I think this dictionary is outstanding, but it requires that you have a pretty good knowledge of German in the first place. If you don’t, you’ll be buying a dictionary to read the dictionary. But it’s thorough and as good as you expect Langenscheidt to be…no online dictionary even comes close.

I really like this dictionary at the intermediate level. It provides the most important meanings, example sentences/phrases, typical words you might see with that word, idioms, etc. The most impoprtant/high frequency 5000 words are noted with a star. I like to pick random words out and read everything about the word. I suggest this dictionary for intermediate users as you will need to understand enough to read the definitions which are also in the target language. Generally for words I don't understand in the definitions, I can likewise go to the definition for those words in the book and generally work it out. I like that the dictionary provides the common words you will see the word associated to, and any common prepositions used.

The Langenscheidt Großwörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache gives German definitions for some 60,000 German words and expressions. Oddly, there is no indication of the level of German needed to understand the definitions. I have been reading German for a long time, and have found the definitions comprehensible, but I cannot say that I have never had to use the dictionary to understand a definition. To give some examples, lügen is defined as ‘etwas sagen, das nicht wahr oder richtig ist, um jemand zu täuschen’, schwanken is ‘jemand/etwas bewegt sich auf der Stelle meist langsam hin und her oder auf und ab.‘ Under Einheit we have, as one definition,ˋwenn verschiedene Dinge (oder Personen) zusammengehören und gut zusammenpassen, dann bilden sie zusammen eine Einheit.'One or more sample sentences are given for each definition. Related words are often grouped under headwords. For instance, Schonung is found under schonen. Pronunciation is not spelled out phonetically, rather the accented syllable is marked and whether the accented vowel is long or short.The entries for German particles are good; some dictionaries don’t even try to define them. There are no biographical entries. The appendix material is not extensive. There is the usual table of strong verbs. There are no biographical entries. A code is given to access the online version.Taking the dictionary for a test run using sixty pages of Die Fröhliche Wissenschaft and a bit of Jenseits von Gut und Böse, I find that the dictionary does not have entries for the words ausbündig, verflackern (but does have flackern), Gesittung, Freudenmädchen, widerraten, anschlagen (in the sense of value or estimate),Ursprünglichkeit(in the sense of originality ie. of mind), lichterloh, and frommen. My Cassell’s German-English dictionary has all these words and meanings, with the exception of verflackern. I had hoped that the Langenscheidt would cover a more extensive vocabulary. It seems I did not get my wish.

The information is direct, relevant, and applicable, in a fine hardcover edition that is tastefully designed and looks good on the shelf.

It was delivered in excellent condition. The online dictionary that is accessible with the purchase of the hardcopy is indispensable. It is completely worth the price.
