Yoga and the Twelve-Step Path

Great way to recover in real life!
I highly recommend to everyone in the recovery path regardless of following the 12 step process; it's not super heavy that way despite the title. The big book and AA etc. are great, but lacking a physical (exercise) component. Adding a form of moving meditation is a wonderful extension of the steps and a helps channel our self-awareness that we might keep doing the next right thing. It seemed a natural progression for me, a very movement oriented person. It also helps release emotions as we stretch and twist out the pent up stress we hold in our bodies. One of my favorite books!

Well Written Book!
Yoga and the Twelve-Step Path is a beautiful book that describes to the reader the importance of adding the positive aspects of a yoga practice to your recovery.I have found having a yoga practice helpful in my life. It can bring healing to anyone experiencing substance use.The book describes how yoga can unite body, mind, and spirit, which is critical when faced with recovering from substance use. I also like how the book mentions that compassion and respect become cornerstones for new behavior. The book describes many styles of yoga with a reference and description of each and other reference materials and information.Kyczy is a talented writer. Yoga and the Twelve-Step Path is an excellent book for anyone interested in changing their life and embracing the gifts of yoga.

"We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us."YAT12S is a great read for those who are on the path and are exploring the tools that are available in allied traditions and technologies. I found this book to be of immense value for theparallels the author has found between the modern and ancient traditions that may seem on the surface to have absolutely nothing to do with each other. However, with a little bit of looking, the similarities are striking and mutually complementary and the author clearly points this out in her text. Additionally, the exercises are awesome for keeping the groundedness necessary to live one day at a time and keep one's self in the body and unperturbed by the mind and "stinkin' thinkin'".There is the added benefit, that yogis may find tools. too, that the 12 steps offer to round out what they have learned having never been to a AA, GA, or NA meeting. Bill W and Dr. Bob found sutras for the modern age (modern sage?).

Expert book, touching topic
Yoga and the Twelve-Step Path combines yoga and recovery philosophies in thorough, insightful language. It will resonate with anyone famililar with either tradition and expand your understanding of both. In essence, addiction and its effects on individuals and people who love them is a fracturing, disintegrating experience. By combining these two modalities, Ms. Hawk leads the reader on a path of reintegration using the "union" that defines yoga as it applies to these specific personal wounds.I purchased it as an introduction to Kyczy's SOAR (Success Over Addiction and Recovery) yoga teacher certification course and found it an excellent adjunct to my experience with her and Kent Bond. Profoundly touching, teaching SOAR brings a deeper meaning to my teaching and to my own healing.

Traveling through life, it is a rare gift as one trudges the road of happy destiny to find a spiritual road map that is just the right fit. It is even rarer when two paths converge into one and you know that you have been traveling on the same road all along. Kyczy Hawk's Yoga and the Twelve Step Path bring home the spiritual path of recovery and the ancient healing of yoga. I've made these connections myself but it was so nice to read it
I've made these connections myself but it was so nice to read it, laid out by someone else. This boosted my spirituality in the program and motivated me to get back into yoga.

Wonderful!
Wow! This book is fantastic, there is so much in here to help anyone who has experienced trauma, addictive or compulsive behaviour directly or has loved ones who are experiencing it. The book is written with kindness and compassion by Kyczy Hawk, herself a recovering addict. It makes you feel understood, cared for and supported on your road to recovery and helping others to recover and can be referred back to over and over again. Kyczy is a true healer, the application of Yoga Philosophy in connection with the successful 12 Step Recovery process is a necessary joining together of 2 effective healing practices, made available & accessible to everyone and supported by the online Yoga classes. Compared to other books of this genre, Kyczy is a Yoga Hero, she is passionate and generous with her teaching and is a necessary enabler for this form of Yoga Therapy to reach those who truly need it. A truly life changing book.

Lovely melding of the two spiritual paths as one journey
A really lovely read and practices to incorporate into your life, especially if you on a 12 step path and embarking on a yogic journey too or perhaps to inspire you to take up yoga and deepen and broaden your recovery :-D

An interesting read
More of an autobiography than a cure. Doesn't actually contain much yoga at all, more of a theoretical explanation of the practice and how the author came to become a qualified yoga instructor. Kyczy's recommendations are good in that she recommends following the 12 step path and attending AA meetings. She highlights the benefits of yoga in terms of a spiritual element in your recovery and a way of finding peace within yourself. However, although the benefits of yoga are substantial for anyone, it is, quite rightly, made clear that yoga will not cure addiction on its own.
