Bosch 1617evs router. the 1/4 in chuck collet has a diameter of .550 in. the opening in the shaft is .500. how to fit?

I suspect you are seeing the part that makes the collet work. The tapered part of the collet fits a taper in the router spindle. As you tighten it, the taper works like a wedge to compress the collet. That's what the slots are for. Please forgive me if you already knew all this and you actually have a defective collet!

You unscrew the 1/2” inch collar and then screw on the 1/4” inch collet
