The Baroness and the Butler

DELIGHTFUL
SUBTLE HUMOR, INTELLIGENT LINES; ENTERTAINMENT THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE A MENTAL FILTER AND WILLIAM POWELL NEVER FAILS TO DELIVER A TOP GRADE PERFORMANCE

William Powell delivers a solid performance in an interesting movie.
I generally don't like movies with a liberal slant, which this made quite apparent, but it was well done, and the liberal side was tolerable for me in that the theme of the story is that something that is pleasant to hear and makes a good appearance (the conservative side in this movie) can be very oppressive, even if not intentionally so. I think that this applies as much to the liberals as it does to the conservatives in real life, so that's how I took it. I didn't mean to make this review so political, but that is what this movie is basically about. It was done, though, in an entertaining way, which was I liked it better than I would've otherwise. Then there's William Powell, one of my favorite actors. That didn't hurt either.

A Classic
Enjoyable romantic comedy. I love William Powell and I'm working my way through all of his films. Found it hilarious that the "Hungarians" all sound British and the prime minister is French. I loved it!

enjoyable
I found this very enjoyable, but then I find anything William Powell does to be so. I haven't found any of his films anything but enjoyable.

Another fun movie for us William Powell fans! But I have yet to find one I didn't like. Good supporting cast, too..

Watch it for William Powell
I am a committed member of the William Powell Appreciation Society and would happily watch him in pretty much anything. Here he plays the butler of the Hungarian prime minister, who is an elderly aristocrat living with his family in a splendid castle. The butler excels in his profession and comes from a long line of butlers who have all served the same family. Then the butler runs for parliament, is elected and various mayhem ensues.William Powell is, as always, magnificent. Not only is he a good actor, he also manages to convey a large dose of likability. The story is entertaining, but - for me at least - somewhat marred by the antiquated attitudes with respect to servants and masters. When watching old movies, one has to accept the different worldviews held then (e.g., with respect to women) and normally I have no problem with it. Here it was a bit much, even though I realize it is part of the story.Anyhow, the print is good as is the sound. No subtitles, unfortunately, but that is OK. The only one who is difficult to understand is the prime minister's daughter as that actress has a very heavy French accent.Overall, the minor characters are good, and William Powell shines in this very old romantic comedy.
