No its not very smooth rotating..not for your use. Maybe a bigger size one would be better for your use. I don't think it would be very sturdy for a bowling ball. I use it for my coffeemaker, which is not too heavy and its fine. Hope this helps you.

Yes, this item would work for that purpose. It is quite heavy duty, and has a non-slip surface. I use it to hold my 32" flat screen tv so that I can turn it to view it from different areas in a large room. The base of the tv sits on the turntable and my television is very stable sitting on this. It rotates easily in all directions. I think that for the purpose you have in mind it will work just fine.
