Question 1

does it support official 5 years warranty?

Accepted Answer

I have purchased many Western Digital drives from Amazon over the years. Until my most recent order, all were eligible for Western Digital's 5 year warranty. When I attempted to register the last drives I purchased, the Western Digital website indicated that the "Products were not eligible for Registration". This generally means that the drives are being sold outside of the region where it was originally shipped. I am returning these drives to Amazon. The warranty is really important because WD will replace any drive that fails within the warranty period. I've had it happen & WD handles it quickly and painlessly. In my opinion, enterprise drives without a manufacturer's warranty should not be put into service.8/29/2013 Update: Amazon shipped my order for multiple drives from different fulfillment centers (presumably they didn't have sufficient quantity on hand from their primary shipping location). The drives that came from Lexington were not eligible for warranty. Those that arrived a day later from North Las Vegas were able to be registered for warranty coverage. The labeling on the WDC boxes was slightly different, so I conclude that the Lexington drives were `gray market'. I hope this is a onetime aberration, but for the foreseeable future, I'll by my enterprise drives elsewhere.

Question 2

is re same as red

Accepted Answer

No. RE drives are similar in performance to Black series drives, but have short error retry intervals better suited to RAID use. Compared to Red drives, they are noisier and faster, and run hotter.

Question 3

Does this drive comes with WD 5-years RAID edition warranty??

Accepted Answer

You can go to Western Digital's web site, enter a drive's serial number, and it will tell you whether it has a WD warranty or not. The 3 drives I just received came back as OEM, which means that WD provides no warranty; it's up to the seller to provide warranty service. UPDATE: I contacted my seller TEK SOLUTIONS, and they replied (on a Saturday no less!) that they offer their own in-house 5 year warranty on these drives, which is great! I recommend checking with your chosen seller before buying for clarification on the warranty details.

Question 4

What is the difference between RE, RE2, RE3, RE4. I am not talking about the drive size. I have an RE3 2 TB and want to buy the same drive.

Accepted Answer

Robert is correct; those refer to the drive generations. The RE3 generation was current about 4 years ago; when I bought one in Spring 2012 it was the RE4 generation. You can still buy new RE4 drives on Amazon, but you may as well buy the current generation (just RE). Take a look at the Western Digital website for current drive versions. In the 2TB size, the current RE drives include WD2000FYYZ, WD2003FYYS, and WD2001FYYG. The newer ones are a lot faster than the RE3.Yes, you should expect a full 5 year warranty with a new WD RE or Black drive. Unfortunately, some resellers are providing refurbs or are pulling drives out of enclosures and selling them as new bare drives. Avoid this scam by 1) avoiding third party resellers; and 2) always checking your drives against the warranty checker on WD's website.
