Donald Passman provides lots of information and a thorough understanding of his knowledge about the music industry on many aspects of how the music industry works, the changes that have taken place, and the new challenges the music industry has had to adapt too. He includes plenty of examples on the different levels and association between music, film, television, PRO, and they're functions within the industry of making music a viable product for artists, record companies, film companies, and consumers alike.The book is a must read for anyone interested in getting a good understanding on how the music business works, and more importantly what has changed with the new business model in producing, marketing, and selling an artist's, songwriter's, or a composer's music.As a required course book from Berkleemusic, the resources and Mr. Passman's knowledge of the music and film industry puts into prospective the many challenges artist, songwriters, and composers will encounter, and how to he provide many example and explanations on the steps required to becoming better prepared for what the industry requires in order to be successful in the music buisness.

I was a little nervous when I saw this was a 512 page book by a lawyer. Ugh. Nothing against lawyers, I just don't share their lingo. I anticipated a long haul and drudgery to get through it. NOT SO!!! This guy rocks. He doesn't bog it down superfluously or try to boast in eloquence/intelligence. He just calls it like it is and adds in a bunch of hilarity. I've been totally interested from page negative 5. I don't really know how many pages the preface stuff takes up, hence the negative 5. However, even those pages are filled with comedy. He has quite the writing style. Very reader friendly. A breeze and a joy to read. Thank you, Mr. Passman!

I was also required to get this book for class. It is one of the music industry standards as far as books go, but then again, there aren't too many books on music business that are fairly up-to-date. This book was highly informative and more on an intermediate level concerning the topics of discussion. It is not too difficult to read, but you will need some sort of prior knowledge of industry terms and concepts (although provided). It is a great book to have on hand when making business deals in the entertainment industry and any general business. I'll Keep this in my library.

Honestly, if you've arrived at considering whether or not to buy this book, do so and don't fret. This book will be well worth your money, regardless of whether or not you use it in any sort of meaningful way. It's highly informative but not heavy handed. Passman doesn't take himself too seriously and reading through the book feels like your being schooled by a friend. That familiarity is comfortable and draws you in. The wealth of knowledge Passman happens to have only makes it all more significant. I've already recommended this to many of my friends interested in the subject and haven't fully finished it myself. I assure you, you're probably reading some garbage in a magazine already. So why not actually buy something that's been proven, by both infuriated and envious industry insiders, as accurate and too informative? You don't get to a seventh edition if the first six were shart.

Passman's book covers everything, right up to the new changes of the digital revolution that is taking place as I type...I have read some other books and taken a course on EdX on the music business. This book is an excellent introduction to the clauses found in contracts, the negotiating points of contracts, the big picture of the music business, the options that artists have besides trying to sign with a major record label, and most importantly, what you can expect from each option that is out there.This book makes clear the economics of the music business right now and how much money is out there for artists, where the money comes from, and whether and when (if) you can expect to get it.It is written in clear language for everyone. Great read.

Pretty good book, gives good insight into the Music Business, but I've read better. It read too much as a narrative in my opinion.

Believe what they say: this IS the Bible. I decided to read it as research for a novel about the life of musicians and it turned out I had to skip over a lot of sections because the book is so detailed that I just didn't have the time to dig into everything. For anyone who is a musician this is a book that has it all and you will definitely be reading it more than once to make sure you have all your bases covered. Whatever the topic you're interested in, the author gives you advice on what to do exactly, and it's solid, extremely detailed advice so that you'd be prepared to face just about anything during your recording career. Added bonus: you get a comparison of how things are done in the UK versus US so you don't need to worry about whether this book is for you or not. I can't imagine there could be a better book on the subject but if there is then this one is definitely very close to perfection.

Prévoyez des post-it, un bloc-notes et un bic pour une lecture optimale !
