K&N 20x20x1 HVAC Furnace Air Filter, Lasts a Lifetime, Washable, Merv 11, the Last HVAC Filter You Will Ever Buy, Breathe Safely at Home or in the Office (Actual Size 19.6 x 19.6 x 0.8 in), HVC-12020

I've slowly replaced every filter-based system with these K&N Home filters. HVAC? Replaced. PC? You betcha, I replaced a side panel on my Lian Li O11 Dynamic with one and can now run a positive pressure system, so dust can't get in .. so nice (if you're curious, I selected that beefy case just for this as the extra width and internal 3x120fan bay allow for this type of filtration once you seal up the inner-wall). Home Theater cabinet? Yep! Air purifier? I jerry-rigged that too and so far, my neighbor hasn't noticed his box fan missing. Are they a tad expensive? Yeah, but the amount of use you're getting out of them is pretty high and they come in cheaper than many of the other "washable" aluminum filters. Out of all "washable" filters I've tried, these function pretty dang well -- and cleaning is a synch. No, you don't need their filter cleaner, you can use some diluted degreaser (dishwashing soap works) in a spray bottle, spray that on, and let it soak, then wash it out (opposite of the airflow, so the dust collecting side is down). Use a flashlight or ceiling light to see through to gauge the cleanliness, more light = more clean .. science! But let's talk fit and performance. Fit: - They're a tad undersized, so you'll want to get some gasket material to make sure you get a good seal. - They come in only (at the moment) 1x# sizes (more like 3/4"), but I hope they will introduce 2" and 3" sooner than later. Performance: - Air flow is surprisingly high with these, higher than a normal comparable fabric/paper filter, and way higher than one rated at this spec. - They have a very high pleat count, so that maximizes the surface area to allow for better airflow. - Static pressure was also better in comparison during my tests. - My HVAC blower got "quieter" running 1x25" filters versus the 2x25" disposable fabric-based ones I had in it before. - Be cognizant to keep them maintained and washed for best performance. I haven't finished my round of additional testing (lack the right meter) to see the particle size that gets through these, but I will say that since switching to them about 6 months back, all I find in the house is a very fine dust -- I'm planning additional tests to see if that is just residual dust in the system (~16 years worth) that is working free.

I ordered 2 of these K&N filters to fit 2 of 3 of my returns. Picked up 14x20x1 and 20x20x1 since they don't have 14x14x1 (yet). I've read plenty of reviews before purchasing both K&N and Trophy Air filters. What I've concluded from those reviews are, either your sacrificing air quality vs air flow efficiency... of course since the higher MERV will restrict more air flow to provide cleaner air. This has always been the case and if you want a whole house filter, then consider expanding to a 4" filter since they are replaced 6 months to 1 year. What I did not see in these reviews are actual numbers or metrics from an anemometer. I've conducted a simple test in Feet Per Minute holding the anemometer center of the return vent: # 14x20x1 (Downstairs, Amana 2 ton system) - Trophy Air (MERV 4/5): ~600 FPM - K&N (MERV 11): ~500 FPM # 20x20x1 (Upstairs, Amana 2.5 ton system) - Trophy Air (MERV 4/5): ~425 FPM - K&N (MERV 11): ~400 FPM # 14x14x1 (Upstairs, Ext. of Amana 2.5 ton system) - Trophy Air (MERV 4/5): ~225 FPM - K&N (MERV 11): TBD - Will update once they produce this size Based on my test results, we can see it's not that dramatic difference like some critical reviews. This is why I like numbers rather than "bro science" assumptions. For those who need >= MERV 13 / filtering <= 1 micron, look into expanding from 1" to >= 4" filter. Seen too many negative reviews with folks expecting >= MERV 13 who bought these... ...washable filters... 🤨 Since the K&N has a higher MERV rating, this filter will be used during the allergy seasons; fall and spring. I will be using the Trophy Air during the summer and winter seasons since the HVAC runs more during these months. Both are excellent quality and will need more time to experience how well they perform. I ordered both since I would need a filter while the other one is drying and having 2 different MERV rated filters, this K&N was the perfect choice since it's one of the highest (MERV 11) rated washable filter. I clean air ducts with the job I have so I am a firm believer in a good quality air filter that doesn't restrict air flow that can cause other issues in its self. Merv 11 is a pretty good for not restricting air flow. The first thing I did was hold this filter up with a light/lamp about 5 feet away I could see light but not make any thing out on the other side of the filter which normally means it has a good density. The filter reminds me of the car air filters that k&n makes but maybe not at thick heavy or dark color. The frame is made of plastic and seems ok made but I would not drop it, it looks like it could crack or break. I was using the cheaper 3m filters which I was not impressed with. When I swapped out to the new air filter I stuck my hand in front of the vent while the air was blowing before and after the swap I did not notice and noticeable difference in air flow with my hand. Now for the bad and or negative. First it is made in China I would have preferred for this to be made in US. Second is the size I ordered a 20x20 I read some other reviews and some people said it was to small. I actually measured the size before I installed, the size is 19 1/2 x 19 1/2. Now I went on k&n website and it states that the are smaller because each frame manufacturer is slightly different in size this is true to a point there is normally not a 1/2 difference is size from frame to frame. The third thing is my air return is in the ceiling and every time the air turns on it picks the filter up and makes a slap sound and it makes a slap sound when it falls back down, this may not be an issues if yours is in the wall or floor. I am going to get some 1/2 on sided foam that is normal used to seal around doors and windows that should help prevent the moving up and down. I feel like the should have provided either some foam to make up the difference and they could have made some plastic pieces that could adjust to make up the difference. Also they recommend cleaning at least every 3 months. I will have to say I always recommend every 30 days in the spring and fall you maybe able to go two months if it's not to hot or to cold. There is also a lot of other variables that come into play. All and all it seems like decent filter, for the price it is one of the better washable filters I have seen. The other filters I was using where around $30 for 6 so I changed my monthly so I will save money in a year. Also when you wash the filter make sure it is completely dry before you reinstall it, I recommend buying a decent cheap throw away filter and install that for 24 hours to make sure the other one is completely dry then swap them back out.

Works great and easy to clean

This was definitely a great find...what a money saver. Even though the original investment it more than the disposables, in the long run its definitely better for both my pocket and the planet. Cleaning is easy but it does take an hour or two to dry if you set it in the sun.

Great airflow, easy to see when cleaning is needed and simple to clean and reuse

I am a maintainer on electronic equipment as an occupation and most electric equipment cabinets have metal, reusable filters. Shortly after purchasing my house I figured they'd have the same for HVAC purposes. Low and behold they do and it works. Make sure to not let these get rusty and try to use a plastic vacuum tip on it as metal tips can damage these. This saves money in the long run, is less of a headache, and is more environmental friendly. I highly recommend these over disposable filters. I have bought different brands to fit different sized air intakes and filters in my home. They all function similarly. This has sturdy construction and I look forward to not needing to replace this hopefully ever.

I built an air filtration setup in my garage for grinding and welding dust. After going through the cheap filters very often, I bought these. They have worked perfectly and are easy and quick to wash out.

Purchased this as a second filter to sub out with my other permanent filter (another brand) when removing it from the air handling unit for cleaning. It fits well in the air handler and appears to do the job filtering dust particles. I haven't subbed it out to clean it yet so gave this four stars with an option for five...
