DSC-RX100M2

I'm going to try to keep this review fairly short because I'm certainly no professional photographer or someone who knows a ton about the inner workings of cameras - what I am is a "normal guy" who wanted to take better pictures than I can get with my phone (I have an iPhone 6s Plus). I film shows for a comedy group and snap pictures. I also used it on a short vacation recently and for stuff around the house/whatever. Just like a non-enthusiast would - and I can say this was a fantastic purchase. I'll list a few things I love about it: 1) It's really easy to use - it has smart settings that work great and you'll never have to worry about the detail settings if you don't want, it takes great pictures this way. 2) It goes from light to dark and back fantastically - in the show I film, actors are walking on/off stage from the darkness and I am really happy that it picks up on them pretty well even in the shadows. 3) There's a button on the back of the camera - click that and no matter what setting the camera is on it will simply start recording video and sound with intelligent settings - really handy since I can go from photos to video that easy. 4) You can take pictures while video is recording - just click the shutter button as normal. 5) The screen on the back can come out and tilt quite a bit, very handy for a lot of situations where you aren't in a perfect situation to film. Now a couple things I think folks should know - 1) The Microphone on this camera is good for filming normal situations - but for group settings where there's a lot of noise coming from different directions (like my filming of actors on stage and an audience talking/clapping/etc) the microphone seems to get a little confused and can jump around to what it's focusing on. It can also sound tinny in this situation - but I never heard that in normal testing of the camera. That said - there's a solution but unfortunately it costs a little over $100 - the Sony ECMXYST1M Stereo Microphone will plug into the top of this camera and is great for these group/varied sound situations. It completely fixed all the issues I stated above. 2) It doesn't come with a memory card so you have to buy one separately. 3) The screen on the back doesn't show stuff in dim light nearly as well as the final product (your video/pictures) does. At first I was disappointed having only seen it from the screen during the filming, but once I got it home and viewed the videos on my computer they looked stunning. I can't speak highly enough for how well this camera handles dim light and light changing situations. I really like this camera, so glad I bought it. Note....got it for 2/3 the price because I bought it from Amazon's warehouse and the box was dinged a little bit - the camera and everything was in absolute new/perfect condition and the box was never opened. Just a mark on it and I saved $196 off the price it shows currently. $200 for a dinged box? Heck yea....what a deal. Happy shooting!

The Sony DSCRX100M2 has hit a home run with me for traveling light while not giving up any picture quality. I am a long time fan and user of Sony NEX/alpha mirror-less cameras, that I will refer to as "NEX" from here on to avoid confusion. Over the years I have owned NEX-3, NEX-5n, NEX-7 and a6000 bodies and a wide range of Sony E-Lenses. But, as wonderful as the NEX camera bodies have been, as compact and easy to carry as they are, you still have to mount normal sized lenses to them. That hasn't really been a problem. But I have longed for an NEX type camera that I could tote in a pocket or bag like a point and shoot. So the Sony DSCRX100M2 and its 20.9 MP 1" Exmor R CMOS sensor was both on my must have list and also something that I was eager to test relative to my past and present NEX/alpha APS-C camera bodies. To start with, the Sony DSCRX100M2 really is like mini-NEX camera, slightly smaller than the original NEX-3 while being quite a bit smaller than the a6000 type camera bodies. The finish, heft and feel are all inspire confidence. I was delighted to find that the user interface was, with a few small changes, basically the same as found on my a6000 body. There are a few small detail changes in the interface, like omitting the AEL lock button and moving that function to the center button, which sadly keeps that button from being used to select ISO. The function display is slightly different. But otherwise the interface should feel instantly familiar to anyone who has used an NEX camera. I quickly set the camera up to my usual settings. One small annoyance is that although the Sony DSCRX100M2 supports bracketed exposures it has reverted to the range that was used in the NEX-3. You can only bracket exposures by a max of 0.7 EV with the Sony DSCRX100M2. not by the full 3EV available in the later NEX and alpha cameras. Sony had introduced a firmware update for the NEX-5n and NEX-7 that implemented the 3EV range for bracketing. I hope they will do the same for the Sony DSCRX100M2. The tilt screen has the same layout as on my prior NEX bodies and is, along with the great performance of these cameras, one of the big reasons I love working with NEX type cameras. I was most interested in the Sony DSCRX100M2's 28-100mm equivalent F/1.8-4.9 lens. I photographed a favorite test scene with full sun and shadow at each ISO and then imported the RAW files into Lightroom. There I applied the noise and sharpening presets that I had created for importing images from my a6000. Then I went through each image and adjusted the parameters to get the best out of each image to create a new set of import noise/sharpening presets for the Sony DSCRX100M2. Although sharpness was not up to the level of my Sony SEL1670Z Vario-Tessar T E 16-70mm F4 it was nevertheless just as good as the kit lenses supplied on the APS-C NEX/alpha cameras. There was some distortion and slight smearing at the edges and corners at the 28mm equivalent that decreased rapidly by 35mm equivalent and after. Sharpness overall from center to edges was very consistent with no negative attention grabbing fall off. Detail resolution was excellent overall. Noise from the 20.9 MP 1" Exmor R CMOS sensor was very low, one big reason to buy a camera with a larger sensor. ISO 100-400 were as one would expect the best ISO ranges for low noise that required minimal correction. But ISO 800 also produced excellent images after careful correction. ISO 1600 was still very good with correction and ISO 3200 was still able to produce usable images with the right noise and sharpening applied. After 3200 you are pretty much in the image salvage business. The images at ISO 6400 are still head and shoulders above the quality you would get with P&S cameras that use much smaller and much noisier sensors. But detail really starts to suffer there and you also reach the limits of noise reduction that can be applied and redeemed by sharpening and detail adjustments. All in all I was very impressed both by the 28-100mm equivalent F/1.8-4.9 lens, the 20.9 MP 1" Exmor R CMOS sensor, the camera's NEX/alpha style interface and the general fit, finish and feel of the whole camera. The flash is strong and also has EV adjustments and several modes. For shooters able to take advantage of and work in post production with RAW output this is just a great camera. It is really necessary, when working with RAW, to use Lightroom or Photoshop, for example, to make use of Adobe's camera lens geometry adjustment profiles that automatically correct for the sort of distortion that is part of any collapsible P&S type lens, no matter how fine the lens may be otherwise. One other note: I bought the Sony DSCRX100M2 instead of one of the later Sony DSCRX100 models because I wanted the 28-100 lens. Although the 24-70mm equivalent lens on later models is, from what I have seen, superior in some subtle ways to the 28-100 lens I wanted that extra bit of tele extension. After testing the camera and shooting with it I am not disappointed. It's a great lens and a minor miracle considering it's small size and collapsible design that retracts into the camera body. I am a happy user of the Sony DSCRX100M2. RECOMMENDED.

Por fin una estupenda relación cámara pequeña-sensor grande, esta relación se nota en el elevado precio. Lo mejor es su generoso sensor de 13,2 x 8,8 mm. sólo 2,8 veces más pequeño en superficie que el de una reflex APS-C. Al ser de ese tamaño, las tomas comprometidas ya son de buena calidad y podemos salir con una cámara de este tamaño sin complejos en situaciones más difíciles, sorprendente los resultados que esto implica, gran sensibilidad, bajo ruido, excelente resolución... En general las cámaras de ese tamaño llevan sensores de 6,2x 4,6 mm. Unas 4 veces más pequeño que en la RS100 y 11 veces más pequeño que una réflex APS-C. La óptica Carl Zeiss es de muy buenos resultados. La pantalla movible hacia arriba o hacia abajo es muy útil, yo las uso casi la mitad de las veces. El resto de las prestaciones que tiene es en su mayoría pura electrónica y software como lo puede tener cualquier otra cámara. La forma de agarrarla da inseguridad pero se puede tunear, por ejemplo pegando un poco de velcro para darla más rugosidad y que no resbale. Suerte en la elección.

Nachdem ich als ambitionierter Hobbyfotograf sehr lange Zeit mit einer Nikon DSLR und umfangreichem Obejktivzubehör und somit entsprechendem "Gepäck" unterwegs war, stieß ich durch Zufall auf einen Kompaktkamera-Test, wo die Sony RX 100 II aufgrund der Optik und eines für diese Klasse extrem guten Sensors sehr gute Ergebnisse lieferte. Nach langem Überlegen habe ich sie mir gegönnt und trotz des etwas höheren Preises die Entscheidung keine Minute bisher bereut. Ausgeliefert wird sie mit einer Handschlaufe, einem Akku und einem USB-Ladekabel, sowei einer Bedienungsanleitung, die trotz ihres Umfanges inhaltlich eher die "Basics" abdeckt. Wer sich intensiver mit der Kamera beschäftigen möchte, dem sie entsprechende Literatur empfohlen. Das Kameragehäuse besteht aus Metall und fühlt sich sehr wertig an, die Knöpfe zur Einstellung sind zwar klein (deshalb ja auch "Kompakt"kamera), haben jedoch eine sehr saubere Führung und gute Verabrbeitung. Vom Gewicht her ist es sicher keine "Billigkompakte", die man mal schnell aus der Hosentasche zaubert, es empfiehlt sich somit zum Schutz dieser schönen wertigen Kamera eine entprechende Kameratasche, wobei nach entsprechender Recherche auf die original Sony zurückgegriffen werden sollte, bei einigen sehr günstigen "Nachbauten" aus Fernost scheinen die Befestigungsschrauben lt. Internet das Stativgewinde der RX100 zu beschädigen, ebenso sei die Passform recht mangelhaft. Den oft erwähnten als Zubehör erhältlichen aufklebbaren seitlichen Griff vermisse ich nicht, auch ohne dieses Feature läßt sie sich ohne Risiko sehr gut halten und tadellos bedienen! Die RX 100 II habe ich mir vor allem statt der RX100 wegen des ausklappbaren Monitors gegönnt, der eine erhebliche Erleichterung bei Überkopf-Aufnahmen oder Aufnahmen ab Gürtellinie abwärts erlaubt. Gerade Kinderaufnahmen wären hier zu nennen. Der Klappmechanismus ist völlig aus Metall (ebenso wie der Mechanismus des kleinen Einbaublitzes) und solide verarbeitet. Anmerkungen von anderen Usern, man müsse aufpassen, dass nichts kaputt ginge, kann ich somit absolut nicht bestätigen! Die Mechanik hinterläßt, wie die gesamte Kamera, einen sehr guten und soliden Eindruck. Ob man den zusätzlichen Blitzschuh auf der Kamera nützen möchte, sei dahingestellt. Sony verlangt für alles Zubehör (Externer Sucher, externes Blitzgerät) unerwartet deftige Preise. Die Menüführung lder RX 100 II ässt sich nach einigem Einarbeiten sehr gut bedienen, Sony hat hier idealerweise sowohl den "Zoomring" am Objektiv frei belegbar gestaltet, ebenso kann man an der Rückseite über eine "FN-Taste" sehr schnell auf gewünschte und bis zu 7 frei konfigurierbare Parameter zugreifen. Die Techniker haben sich wirklich Gedanken gemacht! Der Zommring läuft übrigens auch, völlig entgegen anderer Darstellungen, sehr geschmeidig und lässt sich gut bedienen. Von hier gelesenen und behaupteten "Losbrechmomenten" keine Spur! Die Bildqualität liegt in etwa mit modernen DSLs der Einsteiger- und Mittelklasse gleichauf, meine Nikon macht es kaum besser. Besonder stark ist die RX100 II nicht nur in ihrer sehr guten Bildschärfe. Nachtaufnahmen mit dem entsprechend vorgeschlagenem Programm (wobei sie etliche diverse "Szeneneinstellungen" für jede erdenkliche Fotosituation zur Verfügung stellt), waren eine äußerst große Überraschung! Bilder aus tatsächlich stockdunkler Nacht waren am PC unvermutet derart detailreich, als wären sie in der Dämmerung aufgenommen worden. Bisher hatte ich bei keiner DSLR im Dx-Format derart überraschend gute Ergebnisse! Die RX 100 II geizt auch nicht mit individuell einstellbaren Parametern, so können Kontrast, Schärfe und Helligkeit nicht nur im manuellen oder Automodus nach Belieben korrigiert werden, auch im Szene- oder Programmodus sind Individualisierungen möglich. Leichte Schwächen zeigt sie mitunter bei Makroaufnahmen, da, je nach Fokusvorwahl, die Schärfe nicht immer sofort getroffen wird. Ansonsten arbeitet sie leise und schnell. Zusätzlich kann ein UV-Filter als möglicher Objektivschutz oder für ambitionierte Fotografen ein Polfilter mit der Größe 52 mm angeschafft werden. Sony bietet leider kein Filtergewinde am Objektiv an, bei Kauf von Filteradaptern sollte dringend(!) darauf geachtet werden, dass sie abnehmbar sind, weil einige User schon darauf hingewiesen haben, dass in Kombination mit Blitzlicht und Weitwinkel u.U. durch den Adapterring Abschattungen auftreten können. Somit kämen abnehmbare magnetische Filteradapter oder der original Sony-Adapter wie auch der Adapter von "Lensmate" (ich habe ihn mir aus USA bestellt) in Betracht. Also lieber hier etwas mehr ausgeben! Die Filter selbst sollten als "Slim-Line-Ausführung" erworben werden, da sie wegen der geringen Bautiefe am Objektiv nur marginal auftragen und somit Abschattungen am Rand vermieden werden. Was in keiner Beschreibung erwähnt wird ist, dass die RX 100 II nicht nur einen 3,6-fach Zoom beinhaltet, sondern durch spezielle Einstellungen im Menü über einen "Klarbildzoom" bis hin zu zusätzlichem Digitalzoom ein Endzoombereich von 20 (!) - adäquat über 500mm KB - vorhanden ist (mit entsprechenden qualitativen Abstrichen natürlich, weil es ausserhalb dem "optischen" Zoom dargestellt wird). Zu erwähnen sei noch der Pluspunkt, dass die Sony auch Aufnahmen in HDR produziert. Etliche (aber nur unbewegte!) Bilder werden bei einer Aufnahme übereinander gelegt, so dass sie dadurch brillianter zur Geltung kommen. Landschafts- oder Nachtaufnahmen bekommen somit nochmals einen sehr guten und plastischen Eindruck. Auf eine 2GB Speicherkarte gehen lt. Sony, je nach Auflösung (hier 20 MP), unter JPEG bis zu 170 Bilder in der Auflösung "fein", bei JPEG+Raw sind es nach Herstellerangabe 58 Bilder, nur RAW wären 88 Bilder. Der Akku soll an die 350 Bilder schaffen. Als kleine Zusatzanschaffung für die Reise könnte noch ein Ladegerät mit Akku erwogen werden, da sich der Akku ansonsten per USB-Kabel nur direkt in der Kamera laden lässt. Fazit: Die RX 100 II stellt eine hochqualitative Alternative zu einer DSLR dar, auch anspruchsvolle Hobbyfotografen, die nicht immer ihren "Reisekoffer" mitschleppen möchten und mit einem Bereich von Weitwinkel bis zum leichten Tele von etwa 100 mm KB (optische Brennweite), werden in ihr einen sehr guten Begleiter mit toller Zeiss-Optik, einem sehr guten Rauschverhalten und unzähligen Möglichkeiten in der Bedienung finden. Ebenso eignet sie sich für Einsteiger, die von Anfang an an wertigen Aufnahmen interessiert sind und sich detailliert mit dem Thema Fotografie auseinandersetzen möchten, ohne deshalb viel mitschleppen zu wollen oder stolze Summen in eine gute DSLR mit ordentlichen Objektiven investieren möchten oder können. Für das Publikum mit dem schnellen "Schuß" zwischendurch an der Poolbar oder am Strand ohne nachhaltige Ansprüche auf Bildqualität oder individuellen Einstellungen ist sie sicher die falsche Kamera, wobei durch die preisliche Gestaltung diese Zielgruppe von Sony wahrscheinlich von vornherein nicht angesprochen wird. Der Unterschied zur etwas preiswerteren RX100 liegt darin, dass die RX 100 II über den schon beschriebenen Schwenkmonitor verfügt, zusätzlich wurden Leiterbahnen hinter den Sensor verlegt, so dass er dadurch, im Gegensatz zur RX 100, lt. Sony um eine Blendenstufe nochmals empfindlicher zu sein scheint. Gute Aufnahmebeispiele und Vergleichsmöglichkeiten zu diversen anderen Kameratypen lassen sich auch nochmals zur Kaufentscheidung auf dkamera.de nachsehen.

J en avais assez Que mes enfants critiquent mes photos prises avec mon portable ! Me fiant aux commentaires, J ai acheté ce Sony avant l été lors des Primes days à 314€ et grâce à lui, j ai de superbes photos de cet été et d un récent WE à Etretat ! Je laisse faire l appareil tout seul car je n y connais rien et n ai pas encore pris le temps de m y intéresser et le résultat est extra. Chacun peut s en servir aussi puisque c est tres simple, aucun réglages complexes nécessaires. Et du coup les enfants ont fait de très beaux albums de photos ! J ai aussi acheté le grip, indispensable, le film pour l écran et la housse Sony, eux aussi indispensables à mon avis, d autant que Ns sommes plusieurs à l utiliser.

Avevo necessità di acquistare una compatta premium di piccole dimensioni, e la mia attenzione cadde su questa RX100M2. Superato lo scoglio psicologico del prezzo di acquisto, mi resi subito conto di avere fra le mani un prodotto premium. Piccola, ma pesante, ho dovuto aggiungere l'eccellente impugnatura Sony AGR2 per avere un grip sicuro in ogni occasione. Di tutta la serie (siamo ora alla M5) ritengo la M2 il giusto equilibrio tra prezzo e prestazioni. L'eccellente qualità costruttiva del corpo macchina e la qualità sbalorditiva sia degli scatti che dei filmati sono il biglietto di presentazione di questa micidiale compatta di casa SONY. Umilia tutta la concorrenza senza lasciare modo ed spazio a qualunque tipo di confronto. Menù SONY poco intuitivo, ma una volta capito diventa di rapida consultazione. L'eccellente ottica permette di produrre scatti superbi, con un controllo del rumore agli alti ISO superlativo. Peccato x il costo eccessivo del mirino ottico esterno (400 €) lo ritengo non indispensabile ma molto utile. Utile lo schermo basculante e l'orientamento dell'eccellente flash in dotazione. Consigliatissima

Purchased this camera couple of days before and had been out and out convinced with quality of this product. While I had experimented with various Point and Shhot Cameras, the Sony camera with Carl Zeiss lense are absolute pleasure to handle and watch the clicks for the colors it captures as against ist low priced competitors. The quality of the pictures and its ability to click in low light condition is awesome. In the past I had ventured away from Sony Carl Zeiss lense PS cameras and I am completely convinced that there are no products close to this product at this price. While this camera is costly by its price, it has features which are going to appeal to DSLR user who need better control over the camera modes (Aperture / Shutter priority etc). The normal user may not utilise these features to fullest and for this camera price may look exorbitant (which to my mind it is not.). As an traveller who likes to have convenience of PS camera with abilities of DSLR,this is too awesome camera to be in stock. Folks loving 30 x 50x zooms may get disappointed as this has 3x ZOOM. However the clarity and ability to shoot raw are welcome features. Also flexi screen to tilt in ground level clicking is also a welcome feature. The transfering of the clicks to mobile is so easy that this whole small packet delivers completely to its price. Conclusion :- This is a sophisticated machine which will appeal DSLR lovers who can maximize its potential and easy to fall in love with. Non DSLR users who are keen on 40/50 X Zooms better stay off from this machine as this is not meant for you.
