Unlike most artists, Van Gogh developed very slowly, beginning with work as an art dealer that exposed him to many great works. He undertook this work for several years, after which he spent time as a missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church. Thereafter, he drifted for several years before re-turning home to his parents’ house, where he took up painting, largely self-taught with books on anatomy and painting. His great works all date from the later years of his life. I think it was written by someone who is not a native English speaker...; Gratuitous opinions by the author; Sometimes it seemed written like a high school paper; Sometimes difficult to tell which "he" author was talking about when two names were in the same paragraph. All in all, well worth reading and a nice addition to the body of work about Van Gogh.

A great, succinct beginning!
If you are interested in Van Gogh or art in general, buy this book! At first, you may be disappointed in the size or page count, but don't be. The book is written in prose, but the style is very staccato, almost bullet-point. AND I LOVE IT! People, dates, and addresses are all given in detail. A Good Book!
A surprisingly interesting book !! Sad … but easy to get into and I appreciate him!!! He was a troubled soul!! I love his work and understand it much more after this small book! Well worth reading!!

I needed to refresh the key facts about his life. This book accomplished that by giving the most relevant facts.

Informative
A good beginning. Includes dates, names of contemporaries, places of residence, letters , quotes, and some examples of art. The book told the story but was a little clumsy at times , repeating storylines, pretty simple language. But again a good starting place.

Short but well Written
A short bio of the short and tortured life of the great artist Van Gogh. It is well written with empathy and compassion. But learned things I never knew before. Worth the read. I like the quotes at the beginning of each chapter.

History by bullet point
This is intentionally brief and goes through the main events in Van Gogh's life. The early chapters are extremely terse but in a way the real VG is so elusive is there much point in going into more detail? I got what I wanted from it.

Couldn't put it down
An interesting book. I've always been fascinated by Van Gogh and there was information in the book I didn't know, so I learned something today. Read it in one sitting
