Are these rough/ will they scratch my table? I have a jute floor rug that has some pretty scratchy pieces.

No, the placemats are very soft and pliable. They are smooth and should not scratch or mar your table at all. I really like them and they provide just the touch I was needing for my kitchen table. If you do purchase a set, I believe you will be pleased and hopefully like them as much as I do.

How stiff are they? I'm hoping to use these to make 18th-century bergere hats so I need them very stiff.

They are very stiff but I don’t know if they’re big enough to make a hat. Also fairly thick.
