Graphic Novel about the perils of COMMUNISM
I read this book in 8th grade around the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. I didn’t understand it then mainly because I was completely disinterested. At the time, I didn’t understand why communism was bad. It did not help that my teacher never provided any context or background about it. As an adult I don’t find communism in theory bad or scary (obviously in practice it has proven to be a disastrous form of government in the way of human rights. Of course, America, as a democratic republic, is also disastrous in the way of human rights) Now that my son is in 6th grade I wanted to take a second look, but thought a graphic novel version would be easier to swallow. This version is more of a mix between an illustrated book and graphic novel than merely a graphic novel. The illustrations are impressionistic like and the text is broken up in readable chunks making this version seemingly more enjoyable than what I had to deal with in 8th grade. I can’t wait to read it after my son has first crack at it. My goal is to teach different forms of government including communism and fascism given our political climate and the general public’s misperception of what communism and fascism actually are. Remember Animal Farm is an allegory about the perils of COMMUNISM, not socialism despite what other reviews have said. America (and most Western nations) engages in levels of socialism whether we care to recognize it or not. Thus, Animal Farm the Graphic Novel had made a home in our home library. I’m sure 1984 will make its way to our shelves soon.

Nice Graphic Novel
I bought this book for my eleven year old grandson. It was very understandable, the pictures were great, and he really liked it. A really good book to examine the perils of socialism.

This book is a fantastic read from start to finish. Engaging, well-written, and thought-provoking—it’s one of those titles you’ll want to revisit. Definitely a gem worth adding to your collection. Highly recommended!

Mixed feelings
This book has good images, and is as excellent a book as I remember! I bought it for my 12 year old niece, but I think it is not quite right for her yet. Maybe next year. However, I feel like the text is not the complete un-edited version of Orwell’s story. I have to find a copy of the original to verify that, but this graphic novel skips over some of the introductions and exposition of certain animals, that I think is crucial. For instance, I am certain there was more about Boxer and Clover. Connecting with those characters is very important in the reader’s understanding of the story, and some important events do not have as much impact because that connection is not established as strongly with this text.I love the idea of this version of the book, but I’m not sure it does justice to Orwell’s original, complete story.Mixed feelings. I am thinking of returning this one, and just getting the original.
