Great buy!

Who would have thought - Aquaman getting a second, consecutive, monthly title! Okay, 'the Others' isn't the most exciting name for a super-team, but it's still enough to bring a tear to an Aquafan's eye... this trade paperback reprints the first five issues of the comic, as well as a couple of issues of its parent title. The Others, who appeared previously in 'Aquaman', are Prisoner of War, who can summon the ghosts of a platoon of soldiers who (I think) died under his command; Operative, one of those Batman-types who lives in an airplane called 'the Living Room'; Sky, a Native American girl with all the associated mystical stuff Native Americans usually have in fiction; and Ya'Wara, an eco-terrorist who controls various wild creatures, has an interesting origin involving a female spirit of the Amazon rain forest, and who is the team's designated lesbian. According to the back cover blurb, they're supposed to come from 'nations all around the world', but the story doesn't make this clear - nor tell us what those nations are. After some throwaway stories from 'Aquaman' 20 and annual, it's onto Dan Jurgens' 'Legacy of Gold' storyline from the first five issues of 'AatO'. The Others are all powered by ancient artefacts from Atlantis and someone based in 'Trezygstan' - one of those East European countries US comic writers love to make up (cf Modora, Latveria) - is trying to get said artefacts for what doubtless are nefarious purposes. Jurgens makes some mistakes: after their airplane is hit by a missile, the Others are seen plummeting to earth whilst having a conversation - as if the noise of the wind - not to mention the burning 'plane beside them - wouldn't drown out the sound of their voices! But it's an entertaining story, although - like so many modern comic book storylines - it takes up far too many pages for the actual substance of the story itself. Art: 'Aquaman' 20 is drawn by Manuel Garcia, who produces oddly truncated figures and obviously wasn't paying attention to the script: when Operative refers to his rug being rare and expensive, Garcia hasn't even bothered to draw one! But the penciller on 'AatO' is Lan Medina, who turns in good solid super-hero work, including cute touches such as Ya'Wara's panther curling around her as she sits. But Medina, too, is sometimes sloppy: Operative's grandson Aaron removes his shirt to staunch the flow of blood from a wound suffered by Aquaman; a few panels later the shirt is still pressed to Aquaman's stomach - but Aaron is also wearing it! And when a villain makes reference to "The suits of armour that surround us", it probably would have been a good idea to draw some in the same panel... It's a shame that, with the exception of Aquaman, the Others' costumes are so dull: olive green, dark blue etc. Not for nothing does one of the villains remark "If ever there were two women in need of a personal shopper..." It creates a perception that the Others are just supporting characters for the King of the Sea rather than characters the reader should be interested in reading about in their own right. But I like the logo!

I really enjoyed this one :) As a long lasting Aquafan I can honestly say I love the others volumes so much.

Not much can be said without spoiling it, but it was a good read. I am one of those few DC fans that love Aquaman, and seeing him in different roles such as this one, makes me intrigue. I highly recommend DC fans on picking this copy up!

Für's Auge ist Aquaman and the Others auf jeden Fall eine tolle Sache, der Trade insgesamt überzeugte mich aber leider nicht unbedigt. Zur Begründung (Achtung, es wird GESPOILERT): Die ersten beiden Teile des Bandes sind leider einfach schlecht. Die Geschichte knüpft in etwa da an, wo Band 2 der Aquaman-Reihe, in denen wir die Others kennengelernt haben, aufhört. Es wird jedoch erstmal direkt ein weiterer neuer Charakter eingeführt, um die Others zu ergänzen, den man noch nicht aus Aquaman kannte - allerdings derart 'mit der Brechstange', dass man das Gefühl hat, hier fehlen 20 Seiten. Platte Hintergrundgeschichte, unnütze Nebenfiguren und nicht nachvollziehbare Handlungen ergänzen sich hier leider perfekt. Wenn man Charaktere so lieblos einführt, dann braucht man sich auch gar nicht um Hintergrundgeschichten kümmern. Der zweite Teil fängt dann an, ein Bedrohungszenario aufzubauen, tänzelt aber auch noch um die eigentliche Herausforderung herum. Erst danach, wenn der Kampf um die Relikte von Atlantis in Gang kommt, wird der Band eingermaßen spannend, wobei die Gegner leider auch nur bedingt überzeugen. Das gilt zum einen mit Blick auf die Kämpfe und Fähigkeiten: Wer hat jetzt tatsächlich welche Kraft und wie kann sie sinnvoll im Kampf eingesesetzt werden; wer ist wem potentiell überlegen, sodass eher mit List als mit Kraft gehandelt werden muss, all dieses bleibt unklar und es ist im Prinzip nur ein erst vermopp ich dich, weil ich stärker bin und wenn du dich davon erholst, kannst du mich vermoppen, weil du stärker bist. Hier hätten auch die unterschiedlichen Fähigkeiten der Others (bzw. die Kräfte der Relikte) m.E. in einem Kampf noch VIEL mehr Potential geboten. Zum anderen gilt diese Kritk auch für das jeweilige Handeln der Bösewichte. Arthur wird lebensbedrohlich verletzt und zwar im Schloss der Antagonisten und was passiert? Während sich einige der Others im selben Raum wie die Schurken befinden, beginnt man mit der Versorgung von Aquaman, ohne das sich irgendjemand der Gegenspieler daran stört. Insgesamt war der erste Band für mich ein unterdurchschnittlicher Superhelden-Comic, der allerdings durch das hübsche Art-Work den dritten Stern rettet. Band 2 habe ich mir bestellt aber noch nicht gelesen - und fiebere dem auch nicht so entgegen; Schade eigentlich. Für Aquaman-Fans eventuell trotzdem spannend, weil die Geschichte über die Herkunft der Relikte wenigsten ein bisschen Spaß macht.

怪奇戦争アクション・・・とでも云いたくなるチームもの。 リーダーは顔迄覆う戦闘服に身を包みゴーグルをしたベテラン軍人。戦場で唯一人生き残り、背後霊（？）と成った死んだ仲間達を状況毎に乗り移らせてその技能を自分のものとして使う男。何処でもドア付の、ネコ科の猛獣を引き連れたジャングルの女王。自分のみならず他人を連れて霊界に出入り出来るシャーマンの少女。・・・って、何じゃあ、このメンバー？ どうやらこのチームの誕生についてはAQUAMANシリーズの方に出ているらしい。

The Others are a very unconventional team and a very refreshing one at that. I absolutely enjoyed this book. Though I would first suggest reading Aquaman Vol.2: The Others and Aquaman Vol.3: Throne Of Atlantis first before you dive into this as then you'll have a better understanding of The Others and what they are going after in this book.I hope we get to see more of this team in the future. Aquaman fans should definitely pick this up.
