Very, very good fit for S&W 3rd Gen Compact models
I already owned a 1791 holster for my 1911-A1 45 ACP, so I had a general expectation for quality and fit. Based on experience and comments, both seem to be good to very good generally with some degree of sample defects/rejects. My goal was to find a holster to fit my S&W 3rd Gen 40 cal auto. Smith made many, many different variations - in some cases they made just a few hundred of a model for sale by large distributors. Most of these were marketed in the early to mid 90s so it is very hard to find a holster listed to fit them. It is very difficult to even ask a holster manufacturer for which model might fit because so few still know how to decode the model numbers. Mine is a 4054 - 4 inch, 40 cal, DAO, single stack/compact. It has the same approx form factor as a S&W MP40 and is also close to an XDS. Since this holster was listed to specifically fit both the MP40 and XDS I took a chance and would utilize the extended Amazon XMas return window to try it out. It is not a perfect fit, but it is very close and definitely good enough and holds onto the weapon very well. At the outset it seemed too tight so I used to plastic bag 'trick' detailed in the included instructions. The extra thick bag the holster was shipped in was great for this. After a night or two it is now a nearly perfect, snug fit. Length-wise it is a perfect fit with the muzzle is all the way in without protruding out the bottom (4" barrel). The thumb-strap is semi redundant - a DAO doesn't cock. Still, I wanted the strap any way for positive retention and in case the holster was a little loose or loosens over time. There is a polished, bobbed hammer nub which shows when a round is in the chamber. The thumb strap fits fine over the back of the slide, the hammer (such as it is) and the beavertail. The holster would not work with an optic. I have been looking for a holster for this weapon for a long time. So if you have a compact S&W 3rd Gen it might fit your needs as well. S&W 3rd Gen models comparable to my 4054: 4013, 4014 4053, 4054, 4056 a 1, 3 or 5 in the 3rd position indicates a compact model. Given the fit for my compact model I very much doubt that a double stack 40 would fit (0, 2 or 4 in 3rd slot). I do wish the leather finish was polished or glossy. That is just a preference and it was clear that was not what I was getting. I was just happy to finally find a good fit.

Entry level price for a not so entry level product.
First off let me start by saying my primary experience with holsters has been some form of Kydex prior to buying this holster. I decided on a whim to try a leather holster and 1791 had been a name that has come up regularly as a good product and company so I decided why not. I found this to be a model recommended for my current ccw a cz p-01. It arrived promptly and was well packaged. The holster itself is well made and possibly over made as the leather is so thick and tightly stitched that it is possibly more rigid than kydex holsters. Now this holster comes tight and when I say tight I mean trying to fit into your pre-covid skinny jeans tight. For those not expecting this remember it is leather not kydex it holds more by friction and less by form. Follow the instructions on how to break in the holster and you will be set. Hang on let me throw this out again for people that might not have heard. FOLLOW THE BREAK IN INSTRUCTIONS. Everything said and done I have recommended this to several friends and I have bought from the company again as I got another holster for my cz p10c without the retention strap. If you want a leather holster but want to give it a try before going with a higher dollar product you won't go wrong getting one from 1791 and might just stick with them like me.

Great holster
This is a great holster. Make sure to watch the video on how to break it in. It is very durable and easy to draw and re-holster. It is snug along the waist line, but not uncomfortable. It is also completely concealable with a regular shirt.

GREAT HOLSTER DIFFICULT TO CONCEAL
As always, 1791 Leather makes a great thumb break holster for the Glock 19 I have. The leather is just beautiful and craftsmanship is above and beyond expectations. However, the "design" of this particular holster makes it difficult to conceal carry due to the boxy wrap on an belt. A pancake holster is much easier to conceal, and I have carried for over 30 years now.

The best leather holster I have owned
Hands down the best leather holster I have owned over the years. The leather is awesome and not cheap leather. I wore out my bianchi leather one and was gonna buy another one but took a chance and bought this one. I'm glad because the leather and holster are made way better than my bianchi one. Hands down better leather, construction and attention to detail. Followed the instructions and holster fits like a glove. Ease of draw with out sacrificing retention. It really impressed me I bought two more for different carry pistols I have. It is awesome.

Nice piece for everyday carry
Very sturdy leather construction comfortable for a big guy to use ( 315lbs 6 ft tall) tucks easily under a t-shirt

Does not fit Glock 17 Gen 6
Good quality, heavy stiff leather that needs to break in- and does NOT fit Glock 17 Gen 6 - the beaver tail is in the way of the thumb break strap. I had to carve a good chunk out of the strap because I otherwise really like the holster and want to keep it. Gen 6 has been out for quite some time now…the description could have been updated ..disappointed I had to pay a lot of money to then spend an hour carving, ending up with a “meh” product

Dont judge till get it broke in
I usually don't do reviews, but reading the reviews I was a little unsure if it would fit my glock model 45 or my 19. It fits both just fine after break in by the instructions which took about 15-20 mins. The leather feels good and thick, stitching looks good. The only issue I've had so far is I'm doing a second break for wearing it. I got it broke in for pistol but once I put it on my belt, was almost impossible to draw, repeat break in while on belt seems to be fixing that, and partially due to me wearing on my hip versus behind it where the loops on the holster could lay flat. Overall impressed with the holster and will likely buy more for other guns. Good leather at a price that is affordable.
